This comes at a time when a substantial portion of Americans, reportedly two-thirds according to some polls, identify high healthcare expenses as their primary financial worry.
The TrumpRx platform, launched on Thursday, is presented by the White House as a means to provide “immediate relief” to patients across the United States. The initiative’s core objective is to offer more affordable access to medications.
What is TrumpRx?
The White House has stated that Trumprx.gov offers consumers “direct access to dramatically lower prices” on a variety of commonly used medications. It is important to note that the website itself does not facilitate direct drug purchases. Instead, it guides users to the respective drug manufacturers’ websites where they can then proceed with filling their prescriptions.
TrumpRx clarifies its function by stating it “only displays discounted drug pricing offers” and does not engage in direct sales of medication to consumers. This distinction is crucial for understanding the platform’s operational model.
“It’s a portal where someone can check if they can find a cheaper price, direct-to-consumer, from a drug manufacturer,” explained Kaye Pestaina, vice president and director of KFF’s patient and consumer protections program, in an interview with CBS News. She further elaborated that “It’s not a storefront.”
To acquire a discounted medication through the platform, users are instructed to follow the specific guidance provided for each drug offer presented on TrumpRx.
Who can use TrumpRx?
The TrumpRx platform is accessible to anyone who possesses a valid prescription. However, at present, the platform does not accept insurance and is exclusively available to patients who are paying for their medications out-of-pocket.

“At this time, TrumpRx discounted pricing is only available for cash-paying patients,” the platform explicitly states. This limitation means that any drug purchases made through TrumpRx will not contribute towards a consumer’s insurance deductible.
Despite this limitation, the availability of cheaper, direct-to-consumer options could be particularly beneficial for several groups. This includes uninsured Americans, individuals with high deductibles, and patients whose prescribed medications are not covered by their existing insurance plans.
“You should not be buying drugs anymore, going forward, without at least checking to see if those medications are available at these discounted prices,” advised Dr. Mehmet Oz, the administrator of the Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services, during the platform’s launch.
Conversely, Pestaina pointed out that consumers might already be securing lower drug prices through their existing health insurance plans. She suggested that while TrumpRx “might be a good thing for some people, but for most folks they are paying less through insurance.”
Certain categories of medications, such as GLP-1 drugs used for weight loss, could represent an exception where TrumpRx might offer significant savings, according to Pestaina. She noted that “Your employer might not cover these kinds of drugs, or there could be limitations.”
For example, the White House fact sheet highlighted that TrumpRx offers Novo Nordisk’s Wegovy pills at a reduced price of $149 per month, a substantial decrease from its usual cost of $1,349. The Trump administration also indicated that consumers could achieve considerable savings on drugs used in the treatment of infertility.
President Trump has been advocating for the passage of “The Great Healthcare Plan,” which he introduced in January with the aim of lowering health insurance costs. According to the White House, this proposal is intended to “enable coverage of TrumpRx.gov purchases under health plans” and further reduce medical insurance expenses.
What drugs are offered?
Currently, consumers can access a selection of 43 different drugs through the TrumpRx platform, catering to a variety of health conditions. For instance, individuals seeking fertility treatments can benefit from an 83% discount on Gonal F, a medication containing follicle-stimulating hormone, as listed on the platform.
“Fertility drug pricing could benefit a lot of people, because they aren’t typically covered by insurance, and TrumpRx offers discounts,” stated Merith Basey, CEO of Patients for Affordable Drugs Now, a patient advocacy group, in a conversation with CBS News. This suggests a strong potential benefit for this specific patient group.
Late last year, the White House announced agreements with over a dozen pharmaceutical manufacturers to participate in this coupon-like program. Notable participants include AstraZeneca, Eli Lilly, Genentech, Merck, and Pfizer, among others.
The White House has expressed its intention to establish further agreements with additional drugmakers, which would consequently expand the range of discounted drugs available through TrumpRx.
