SouthernWorldwide.com – The San Francisco 49ers have announced the death of former NFL player Aldon Smith at the age of 36.
The team expressed their profound sadness over the sudden and tragic loss. They acknowledged Smith’s exceptional talent and dominant presence on the field from his very first days with the organization.
The 49ers statement highlighted Smith’s remarkable rookie season, which was one of the best the league had ever witnessed. Beyond his athletic achievements, they remembered him for his radiant smile that brightened every room.
The organization extended its deepest sympathies to Smith’s family and all those who cherished him. Smith’s career was characterized by an explosive start, marked by historic achievements, which was unfortunately overshadowed by off-field issues and struggles with substance abuse.
Drafted seventh overall by the 49ers in 2011 out of Missouri, Smith made an immediate impact. As a situational pass rusher in his debut year, he accumulated an impressive 14.0 sacks.
His sophomore season in 2012 was a record-breaking year for the 49ers. Smith recorded 19.5 sacks, earning him First-Team All-Pro honors and playing a key role in the team’s journey to Super Bowl XLVII.
Significantly, Smith achieved 30 career sacks in just 27 games, a feat that made him the fastest player in NFL history to reach that milestone. This broke the previous record held by the legendary Reggie White.
However, Smith’s career trajectory shifted in 2013 when he voluntarily sought rehabilitation and missed five games. The following year, in 2014, he faced a nine-game suspension due to violations of the NFL’s substance abuse and personal conduct policies.
The 49ers released Smith in August 2015 following his third DUI arrest. A month later, he signed with the Oakland Raiders, playing nine games before the NFL imposed a one-year suspension in November.
Smith remained indefinitely suspended from the NFL for four full seasons as he navigated ongoing legal and personal challenges. His journey in the league was marked by these significant disruptions.
A comeback attempt materialized in 2020 when Smith successfully applied for reinstatement. He played a full season with the Dallas Cowboys, starting all 16 games and recording 5.0 sacks and 48 tackles.
The following year, in April 2021, he signed with the Seattle Seahawks. However, he was released before the season commenced after another arrest.
As of the announcement, no cause of death for Aldon Smith has been publicly disclosed.
