SouthernWorldwide.com – As the United States prepares to celebrate its 250th anniversary, travelers are highlighting some of the nation’s most cherished amusement parks. Notably, a century-old Pennsylvania destination has claimed the top spot, surpassing renowned theme park giants like Disney and Universal.
In an era characterized by escalating theme park ticket prices and mandatory admission fees, Knoebels Amusement Resort in Elysburg, Pennsylvania, continues its tradition of offering free entry to all guests.
This family-owned park has maintained its commitment to free admission since its grand opening on July 4, 1926.
The park was recognized as No. 1 in Tripadvisor’s 2026 Travelers’ Choice Awards. These rankings are determined by the cumulative quality and volume of traveler reviews submitted between February 1, 2025, and January 31, 2026.
“The top two spots might be a surprise to some, but I believe cost is a significant factor influencing these results,” commented Bowman.
Here’s a detailed look at the top five amusement parks in America, according to Tripadvisor’s rankings.
Knoebels, which will celebrate its 100th anniversary in 2026, stands as America’s largest amusement park with free admission. Guests have the option to purchase individual ride tickets rather than paying an upfront admission fee.
The park boasts classic wooden roller coasters, a variety of family-friendly rides, camping facilities, a large swimming pool, golf, and picnic pavilions, making it a perennial favorite for vacations spanning multiple generations.
Bowman highlighted the park’s affordability and relaxed atmosphere as key elements contributing to its appeal among visitors.
“Knoebels Amusement Resort offers free admission, with costs applied per ride,” Bowman explained.
“Knoebels generally isn’t overly crowded,” he added. “It also features a substantial swimming pool and expansive pavilions where many visitors opt to bring their own food.”
Dollywood secured the second position on Tripadvisor’s list, having held the top spot in previous years.
This Tennessee theme park, co-owned by country music legend Dolly Parton, is celebrated for its successful fusion of thrilling rides with live entertainment, Appalachian heritage, and authentic Southern culinary offerings.
Bowman suggested that its comparatively reasonable pricing, especially when contrasted with many larger destination parks, likely contributed to its high ranking.
“Dollywood is considerably more budget-friendly than the major theme parks located in Florida,” Bowman stated.
Magic Kingdom was recognized as the highest-ranking Disney park within the United States, reinforcing its status as one of the nation’s most iconic family destinations.
The park is home to beloved attractions such as Space Mountain, Pirates of the Caribbean, Haunted Mansion, and the iconic Cinderella Castle.
“It comes as no surprise that Magic Kingdom is the top Disney park in this ranking,” Bowman remarked.
Disney’s Hollywood Studios has continued its upward trajectory into Tripadvisor’s top five, following several years of significant expansion and development.
The park has introduced highly anticipated attractions and themed lands in recent times, including Star Wars: Galaxy’s Edge, Toy Story Land, and Mickey & Minnie’s Runaway Railway.
Bowman attributed these new additions to enhancing the park’s appeal and reputation among its visitors.
“Hollywood Studios making it into the top five is a significant achievement for Disney, considering all the recent enhancements and new attractions they’ve invested in at that park,” he noted.
Universal Islands of Adventure completed the top five, maintaining its position as a leading destination for thrill-seekers across the country.
The park is renowned for its attractions based on popular franchises, including Harry Potter, Marvel superheroes, Jurassic Park, and Dr. Seuss, offering a combination of high-speed roller coasters and immersive themed environments.
Although it narrowly missed the top four, Bowman also pointed out another Universal park that warrants special mention.
“While not on this specific list, Universal Volcano Bay Waterpark certainly deserves recognition,” he said.
Rounding out the top 10 are Epcot, LEGOLAND California, Universal Studios Florida, Disneyland Park, and Silver Dollar City.
