SouthernWorldwide.com – A recent incident at Carnival Cruise Line’s Celebration Key in the Bahamas has raised concerns, as an elderly passenger died after her mobility scooter fell off a pier. This marks the third fatality at the popular port since its opening less than a year ago.
The 88-year-old American tourist reportedly lost control of her mobility scooter around noon on Saturday, according to local reports. A Carnival spokesperson confirmed the unfortunate event to Fox News Digital.
The spokesperson stated that a female guest, while using a mobility scooter, drove off the pier at Celebration Key and fell into the water. Carnival teams were quick to respond, successfully retrieving her from the water.
Despite immediate resuscitation efforts, the passenger did not survive. The Royal Bahamian Police Department and the coroner’s office took custody of the deceased. Carnival expressed its deepest sympathies to the family of the passenger.
Authorities believe the woman may have struck her head against the hull of the ship. One passenger shared with a local news outlet that the woman “had a heart attack” before going over the side with her scooter.
The witness added that the woman “banged her head pretty bad.” Her husband reportedly attempted to help, sustaining injuries himself in the process. The passenger was transported to the ship’s medical facility where she was later pronounced dead.
This latest death follows two previous fatalities at Celebration Key, a Grand Bahama resort that officially opened on July 19, 2025. The $600 million development boasts extensive lagoons, beach areas, and various swimming zones, aiming to be “Your Key to Paradise” as described on Carnival’s website.
Last year, a 79-year-old man and a 74-year-old woman tragically drowned in separate incidents at Celebration Key. The man died while snorkeling at a beach, while the woman was swimming in a lagoon pool.
In both instances, lifeguards managed to pull the individuals from the water and administer CPR, but their efforts were unsuccessful. At the time, a Carnival spokesperson confirmed that one guest was sailing on the Mardi Gras and the other on the Carnival Elation, both with their families.
The cruise line extended its thoughts and prayers to the guests and their families, with its Care Team providing necessary assistance. The news of the latest death has prompted reactions from passengers in a Carnival Cruise Line Facebook group, many expressing shock and sadness.
“That is scary! And so sad!” one user commented. Another wrote, “So sorry to hear. Prayers to her family and friends.” A third user highlighted the recurring nature of the tragedies, stating, “This is the third death to happen at Celebration Key since it opened last year.”
This incident at Celebration Key is separate from another unfortunate event involving a Carnival Cruise Line ship. In April 2026, a passenger died after falling from the balcony of her room while the vessel was sailing near Catalina Island.
