Texas Voters: Paxton Didn’t Need Trump’s Endorsement to Beat Cornyn

SouthernWorldwide.com – Supporters at Ken Paxton’s election night watch party in Plano, Texas, expressed on Tuesday that their backing for the Republican Senate candidate was firmly established long before President Donald Trump issued his endorsement.

Many pointed to Paxton’s legal challenges against the Biden administration, his conservative principles, and his extensive history as a significant figure in Texas politics as the primary drivers of their support.

Trump’s endorsement, which was released precisely one week prior to Tuesday’s runoff election against Republican Senator John Cornyn, injected renewed energy into one of the most closely watched Republican contests nationally. This race has been ongoing for over a year and has become the most financially demanding Senate primary in U.S. history.

Several supporters conveyed their belief that Paxton had already cultivated deep loyalty among Texas conservatives well before Trump officially lent his campaign his support.

“I was present at the rally when Trump endorsed Paxton, and frankly, I felt he already possessed the support,” stated Lisa Full from McKinney, Texas. “I don’t believe the endorsement made a significant difference for most individuals, as we were already behind Paxton. It might have influenced some voters, but the majority of people I engaged with were already backing him.”

Full, who mentioned knowing Paxton through their church, also contended that many Republican voters had grown increasingly dissatisfied with Cornyn over the years and were actively seeking a substantial challenger to step forward.

Other supporters highlighted Paxton’s legal confrontations with the Biden administration as a principal reason for their support of his Senate candidacy.

Christie Grubbs, an educator attending the event, shared similar sentiments, explaining that she supports Paxton due to his management of the COVID-19 pandemic and his opposition to the Biden administration.

As supporters celebrated Paxton’s victory on Tuesday evening, some began shifting their focus toward the general election and a potential contest against Democratic State Representative James Talarico, a progressive figure gaining prominence in Texas politics.

Talarico has garnered national attention for his pointed critiques of Republicans and his robust presence on social media.

Numerous attendees at the Plano watch party conveyed confidence that Paxton’s conservative track record and his close association with Trump would resonate more powerfully with Texas voters in a direct electoral confrontation in November.

“I mean, he’s a bit out there,” Montes commented, referring to Talarico.
