DOJ Sues UCLA Over Alleged Discriminatory Conditions

SouthernWorldwide.com – The Justice Department has initiated legal action against the University of California, Los Angeles (UCLA), asserting that the university permitted a hostile educational environment for Jewish students amidst months of anti-Israel protests and encampments. These demonstrations reportedly led to students experiencing assaults, being denied access to campus buildings, and living in fear of attending classes.

The lawsuit explicitly states that the protesters largely achieved their objective of making the campus center “Judenrein”—meaning free of Jews—or at least devoid of those who did not share their views on the annihilation of Israel.

In a comprehensive 53-page complaint, the Justice Department contends that UCLA violated Title VI protections by exhibiting “deliberate indifference” to discrimination faced by its Jewish students. Such allegations carry the potential to jeopardize the university’s federal funding.

The DOJ emphasized that UCLA was deliberately indifferent to the distress of its Jewish and Israeli students and failed to implement effective measures for their protection.

This legal action is part of a broader initiative by the Trump administration aimed at confronting the rise of antisemitism, which has become increasingly prominent in anti-Israel protests that have swept across college campuses following the Hamas attacks on Israel on October 7, 2023.

The Justice Department further alleged that UCLA’s Office of Equity, Diversity, and Inclusion had a pattern of “routinely ignoring” over 100 complaints concerning antisemitic harassment. These incidents included Jewish students being physically blocked from campus buildings, as well as experiencing assaults such as being beaten, pepper-sprayed, and struck with sticks.

The core of the lawsuit centers on UCLA’s response to the anti-Israel protest encampment that was established on campus in late April 2024 and persisted for approximately a week. During this period, similar encampments emerged at numerous universities nationwide in reaction to the escalating conflict in Gaza.

The conduct observed within the UCLA encampment prompted the Trump administration to form a dedicated antisemitism task force, which subsequently visited the campus.

The anti-Israel encampment was erected on April 25, 2024, leading to numerous complaints that protesters formed “human phalanxes” to obstruct Jewish students’ access to buildings and other campus areas. The lawsuit also details an incident where a Jewish student was allegedly kicked to the ground and rendered unconscious.

Law enforcement did not dismantle the encampment until May 2, 2024. The clearing operation was described as chaotic, with anti-Israel protesters clashing with officers, who were reportedly met with pepper spray and fire extinguishers.

Confrontations between anti-Israel protesters and police at UCLA continued, with six UCLA police officers sustaining injuries on June 10, 2024, during an attempt to establish a new encampment.

Even after acknowledging concerns regarding the violence during the spring 2024 anti-Israel protests, UCLA school safety officers were reportedly instructed to prioritize “de-escalation” over the strict enforcement of campus policies during subsequent anti-Israel protests that occurred in 2025 and 2026.

During a demonstration organized by Students for Justice in Palestine on October 7, 2025, officers reportedly stood by without intervening, despite some participants violating the campus’s “no masking rule.” When questioned about the lack of enforcement, an officer allegedly stated he was “not that high up on that totem pole” to make such decisions.

The lawsuit significantly draws upon the findings of UCLA’s internal task force to substantiate its claims that the university’s leadership failed to adequately protect Jewish students on campus.

The lawsuit quotes the UCLA Task Force’s findings, which indicated that “throughout most of 2023-2024, campus leadership repeatedly decided not to enforce federal law, state law, and University and campus rules,” ultimately resulting in a failure to protect the “Constitutional rights” of Jewish individuals on campus.

Furthermore, the lawsuit references a poll of Jewish students, which revealed that 59.6% reported reducing their time spent on campus due to antisemitism and anti-Israeli bias. Additionally, 41.4% of these students had considered withdrawing from the university because of antisemitic sentiments.

This lawsuit from the Trump administration follows a separate legal case filed by the Justice Department against UCLA in February. That earlier case accused the university of fostering antisemitic discrimination against its Jewish and Israeli employees.
