SouthernWorldwide.com – Four new astronauts have successfully arrived at the International Space Station (ISS), restoring the orbiting laboratory to its full operational capacity. This arrival follows the early departure of several crew members last month due to a medical emergency.

The international crew, comprising astronauts from the United States, France, and Russia, embarked on their journey from Cape Canaveral aboard a SpaceX rocket on Friday. Their voyage spanned approximately 34 hours.

“That was quite the ride,” commented NASA Commander Jessica Meir shortly after liftoff, as reported by BBC News. “We have left the Earth, but the Earth has not left us.”

The launch had previously faced two postponements due to unfavorable weather conditions.

Joining Commander Meir for an extended stay of eight to nine months aboard the Space Station are NASA astronaut Jack Hathaway, France’s Sophie Adenot, and Russia’s Andrei Fedyaev.

Meir, a distinguished marine biologist, and Fedyaev, a former military pilot, are both seasoned visitors to the ISS. Notably, Meir was also part of the historic all-female spacewalk in 2019.

Adenot brings her expertise as a military helicopter pilot, while Hathaway serves as a captain in the U.S. Navy.

Sophie Adenot marks a significant milestone as only the second French woman to venture into space.

NASA announced that the spacecraft was scheduled to autonomously dock with the ISS’s Harmony module at 3:15 p.m. on Saturday, February 14th. The docking occurred while the spacecraft was traveling at a speed of 17,000 mph in Earth orbit.

“What an absolutely wonderful start to the day,” expressed NASA Administrator Jared Isaacman following the successful launch. “This mission has shown in many ways what it means to be mission-focused at NASA.”

“In the last couple of weeks, we brought Crew-11 home early, and we pulled forward Crew-12 to the launch date today,” he added. “All of this was happening simultaneously while making preparations for the Artemis 2 mission, with its next launch window opening in early March.”

This flight represents the 12th crew rotation to the orbiting laboratory conducted by SpaceX as part of NASA’s Commercial Crew Program. Crew-12 is tasked with conducting vital scientific investigations and technology demonstrations. These efforts are crucial for preparing humans for future exploration missions to the Moon and Mars, with the added benefit of contributing to advancements for people on Earth.

According to NASA, the capsule’s hatch was opened at 4:14 p.m. CT, shortly after its successful docking with the space station.

“We are so excited to be here and get to work,” Commander Meir conveyed upon the crew’s arrival on Saturday.

Adenot shared her awe-inspiring experience: “The first time we looked at the Earth was mindblowing. … We saw no lines, no borders.”

Prior to the arrival of Saturday’s crew, only one American and two Russian cosmonauts remained aboard the ISS, diligently maintaining its operations.

The medical evacuation in January was the first such event in 65 years, occurring after a crew member experienced a serious health issue. The space agency has maintained strict confidentiality regarding the nature of the medical condition and the identity of the astronaut involved, citing privacy concerns.
