SouthernWorldwide.com – A Black Hawk helicopter played a crucial role in intercepting a suspected drug smuggling vessel off the coast of Puerto Rico earlier this month.

The U.S. Air and Marine Operations (AMO) successfully utilized the helicopter to assist in the operation. On May 14th, AMO surveillance detected a 25-foot blue boat carrying three individuals and visible packages.

Following the observation, the San Juan Marine Unit dispatched two law-enforcement boats. These boats were supported by the Black Hawk helicopter, as confirmed by U.S. Customs and Border Protection (CBP).

During the operation, three nationals from the Dominican Republic were apprehended. Additionally, authorities seized five bales containing a significant quantity of cocaine, totaling 391 pounds.

This helicopter-assisted takedown is the latest in a series of actions by U.S. military forces targeting drug trafficking operations south of the U.S. border.

The Caribbean region has seen a shift in border security focus, with Homeland Security engaged in efforts within Puerto Rico.

“Our Air and Marine Operations teams demonstrated exceptional skill and coordination in this interdiction,” stated Caribbean Air and Marine Branch Director Christopher Hunter. “The decisive use of air disabling fire by our Black Hawk crew was instrumental in stopping the vessel and preventing dangerous narcotics from reaching our communities.”

Hunter further emphasized the collaborative nature of such operations. “This operation highlights our commitment to working with partners across all levels to disrupt smuggling networks and protect the security of the United States and its territories.”

During his second administration, President Donald Trump had previously declared his intention to combat drug smuggling by all available means, labeling it a threat to the homeland.

On January 20, 2025, Trump declared a state of emergency in response to the influx of narcotics. This declaration was aimed at addressing the significant threat posed by these substances.

The White House issued a statement at the time, saying, “They present an unusual and extraordinary threat to the national security, foreign policy, and economy of the United States. I hereby declare a national emergency to deal with those threats.” This was outlined in an executive order.

In line with this posture, the Department of War drew national attention for its actions. The department began conducting strikes on boats operating off the coast of Venezuela.

These strikes were described as being consistent with the administration’s stance on combating drug trafficking. After nearly 20 strikes in Caribbean waters, Secretary of War Pete Hegseth reported positive outcomes.

Hegseth shared on social media, “WINNING: Some top cartel drug-traffickers in the U.S. Southern Command have decided to cease all narcotics operations INDEFINITELY due to recent (highly effective) kinetic strikes in the Caribbean.”

In the specific Black Hawk incident, U.S. agents chose a direct approach to intercept the vessel. Instead of engaging from a distance, they opted to get closer.

The three individuals on board the suspected smuggling boat complied with agents as they approached. They raised their hands above their heads and were subsequently brought onto the U.S. law-enforcement boats.

A thorough search of the vessel revealed evidence of its illicit activity. Agents found empty plastic containers and other unidentified packages on board.

The contraband that had been thrown into the water during the pursuit was also successfully recovered, according to information provided by CBP.
