Police Lt. Col. Aung Myat Soe of Yangon’s Anti-Narcotics Police Force stated that the street value of the drugs destroyed this year was more than double that of the previous year. In Yangon alone, drugs valued at approximately $321 million were incinerated. These comprised 31 different types of illicit substances.
Footage captured in Yangon depicted a vast quantity of drugs engulfed in flames. Thick plumes of black smoke billowed into the sky, a stark visual representation of the scale of the drug problem.
Burma has long been recognized as a significant source of illegal drugs trafficked to East and Southeast Asia. This persists despite ongoing efforts to curb production and distribution.
The country is historically one of the world’s largest producers of heroin and methamphetamine. This production has been a persistent challenge for regional and international drug enforcement agencies.
Experts have indicated to The Associated Press that violent political unrest in Burma has contributed to an increase in drug production. The military takeover in 2021 plunged the country into a civil war.
This conflict involves the military government, pro-democracy opposition forces, and various ethnic armed groups. The instability has created an environment conducive to the expansion of illicit drug operations.
In January, the military government announced what it claimed were the largest-ever seizures of illicit drugs and drug-manufacturing equipment in the country’s history. These were reportedly confiscated from 12 drug production sites in the northern Shan state during a series of raids.
