SouthernWorldwide.com – The Trump administration has appointed Rosario “Pete” Vasquez, a seasoned Border Patrol official with over 26 years of dedicated service, to assume the role of the next Chief of the U.S. Border Patrol. This significant appointment follows the resignation of the previous chief, Mike Banks.
The announcement was made by U.S. Customs and Border Protection (CBP) on Monday. Vasquez will now be at the helm of an agency comprising nearly 20,000 agents and professional staff operating across the entire United States.
Prior to this promotion, Vasquez held a key leadership position as the head of the Border Patrol’s Blaine Sector in Washington state. In this capacity, he was responsible for overseeing operations along the U.S.-Canada border and fostering collaboration with a wide array of partners, including federal, state, local, tribal, and international entities.
CBP Commissioner Rodney S. Scott expressed strong approval of Vasquez’s selection, describing him as “a Border Patrol agent’s agent.” Scott highlighted Vasquez’s extensive experience, noting his two decades of leading from the front lines.
Scott further elaborated that Vasquez has consistently earned the respect of the workforce and has a proven track record of delivering results, even in the most demanding operational environments within the country. He emphasized that Vasquez’s deep understanding of the mission, forged through personal experience, makes him exceptionally qualified to lead the U.S. Border Patrol into its future endeavors.
Vasquez steps into the role previously held by Mike Banks, who announced his retirement in May. Banks had been leading the agency during the second term of President Donald Trump’s administration.
As the new Chief, Vasquez will be entrusted with leading Border Patrol operations that span an extensive 7,000 miles of international land borders, in addition to approximately 2,000 miles of U.S. coastal waters.
According to CBP, Vasquez’s illustrious career has seen him serve in a diverse range of operational and leadership capacities. These assignments have included stints along both the southwest and northern borders, at CBP headquarters, and in international postings.
His professional background is notably rich, encompassing service with the Border Patrol’s Search, Trauma, and Rescue Unit, as well as the agency’s elite Special Operations Group. He also held positions within CBP’s Office of Anti-Terrorism.
Furthermore, Vasquez’s experience extends to serving as the director of the Alliance to Combat Transnational Threats. He also held the role of assistant attaché for CBP in Canada and served as the acting executive director within CBP’s Office of Trade.
This appointment arrives at a critical juncture, as Border Patrol officials continue to intensify their focus on combating transnational criminal organizations. Efforts are concentrated on disrupting human smuggling and narcotics trafficking networks, alongside strengthening overall border security operations.
Vasquez expressed his profound gratitude and honor in taking on the mantle of Chief of the U.S. Border Patrol. He conveyed his appreciation for the trust placed in him by President Trump, Secretary Mullin, and Commissioner Scott.
