SouthernWorldwide.com – Victor Wembanyama’s assertive play on the basketball court once again drew scrutiny during Game 3 of the NBA Finals between the San Antonio Spurs and the New York Knicks at Madison Square Garden.
In the first half, as Knicks’ All-Star guard Jalen Brunson was attempting to defend Wembanyama near the free-throw line, the 7-foot-4 center placed his hand on the back of Brunson’s head and pushed him to the floor.
Significantly, Wembanyama was not penalized with a foul, and the game proceeded with the Knicks retaining possession of the ball.
Brunson immediately confronted Wembanyama, and it appeared the French player was smiling before Brunson refocused on the game.
This incident bore a striking resemblance to an event in Game 2, a victory for the Knicks on the road. In that game, Jose Alvarado, Brunson’s backup, attempted to box out Wembanyama. Alvarado, who is of similar height to Brunson, was grabbed by Wembanyama and forcibly moved away from the play.
Notably, no foul was called in that instance either.
While the Spurs are recognized for their physical style of play, many observers felt that Wembanyama should have been assessed fouls for these actions.
San Antonio began Game 3 with a strong offensive performance, establishing an 11-point lead by the end of the first quarter with a score of 33-22. However, the Knicks have demonstrated a consistent ability to overcome deficits.
Following a surge in the second quarter, the Knicks managed to secure a seven-point lead by halftime.
Brunson was instrumental in this comeback, scoring 15 points on 5-of-11 shooting from the field, in addition to contributing three assists and one rebound.
Wembanyama also had an efficient offensive showing, scoring 15 points on 6-of-10 shooting. He additionally secured four rebounds and dished out three assists.
The Spurs are aiming to avoid a challenging 3-0 deficit in the best-of-seven series. Meanwhile, the Knicks are eager to maintain their momentum into the second half, hoping to achieve a sweep in their home arena on Wednesday night during Game 4.
