The game took place at the Frost Bank Center on Wednesday night.
According to NBA reporter Chris Haynes, these fans were heard making vulgar comments, accusing Brunson of “flopping.” The taunts reportedly began with approximately 20 seconds left in the game, a point at which the Knicks had already established a significant lead.
Following the conclusion of the game, Brunson, who is 29 years old, approached referee Scott Foster. He informed Foster about the situation and requested that something be done. Reports indicate that Foster was within earshot of the fans and overheard their derogatory remarks.
The television broadcast of the game captured footage of Brunson speaking towards the fans. At one point, Foster stepped between Brunson and the fans. Teammate Jose Alvarado was also seen pulling Brunson away from the scorer’s table.
Earlier in the fourth quarter, after making a shot, Brunson was observed pointing in the direction of the fans. Despite the alleged provocation, Brunson’s performance in the final quarter was strong.
While the fans may have caused irritation for the Knicks’ captain, it did not appear to affect his play against the Spurs’ defense. Brunson scored 13 of his total 30 points in the fourth quarter, making 5 out of 9 shots. This performance was crucial in securing the Knicks’ 105-95 victory.
Overall, Brunson’s shooting efficiency throughout the game was not at its peak. He made 12 out of 31 field goal attempts and 2 out of 9 three-point attempts. However, he demonstrated his ability to perform under pressure when it mattered most, leading the Knicks to a crucial Game 1 road win.
