SouthernWorldwide.com – Republican senators have voiced their support for imposing consequences on cities designated as “sanctuaries” for undocumented immigrants, following a proposal by Homeland Security Secretary Markwayne Mullin. The proposal suggests withdrawing Customs and Border Protection (CBP) officers from airports located in jurisdictions that do not cooperate with federal immigration authorities.
Secretary Mullin has presented this plan as a direct response to sanctuary cities that are limiting or outright refusing to collaborate with Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE). This initiative also arises amidst ongoing disputes concerning the funding for immigration enforcement.
The proposed action has already encountered significant opposition from Democrats. Critics argue that removing CBP officers from airports in these cities would effectively halt all international travel into major hubs. Without customs agents, both passengers and cargo would be unable to enter or depart internationally, and this would also affect American citizens returning to the U.S. from overseas trips.
Transportation Secretary Sean Duffy has also expressed his disapproval of the idea. He underscored the critical importance of maintaining open travel routes.
Despite the backlash, Secretary Mullin maintains that the proposal remains under active consideration and is still on the table.
Senator Deb Fischer of Nebraska stated that the decision rests with the cities themselves. She believes they must carefully consider the ramifications of their choices. “If they want to be a sanctuary city, they’ve made that choice and they’re getting a response now from Homeland Security,” Fischer commented.
Other Republican senators indicated that they had not yet had the opportunity to review the proposal in detail. They expressed a need for more information before offering their definitive opinions.
“I don’t know about this,” said Senator Josh Hawley of Missouri. “Somebody else asked me about that, and I hadn’t seen that from him yet. So I don’t know. I don’t know what to make of that.”
“I need to learn more about it,” added Senator Ashley Moody of Florida.
“I’m gonna find out what’s going on,” stated Senator Lisa Murkowski of Alaska.
Secretary Mullin faced intense questioning last week during a Senate hearing concerning these potential actions against major city airports. Democrats at the hearing described the idea as “outrageous” and “insane.” They pointed to the high probability of widespread chaos and severe economic damage, particularly given the projected surge in travel volumes expected during the upcoming summer months.
When asked if the proposal, if implemented, would alter how sanctuary cities interact and cooperate with ICE, Senator Fischer responded that she had no insight into the cities’ potential reactions. “I would hope that their law enforcement would cooperate with ICE. ICE is federal law enforcement. They’re doing their job. They’re following the law,” she stated.
This proposal emerges at a time when the United States is preparing to host millions of international visitors for the World Cup. This major sporting event is anticipated to generate one of the highest inbound travel volumes in recent years.
