SouthernWorldwide.com – A significant portion of the American population is making difficult financial choices to manage healthcare expenses, with many resorting to skipping meals and rationing medications.
New polling data from the West Health-Gallup Center on Healthcare in America reveals that one-third of Americans are cutting back on essential daily living costs. This includes foregoing meals and extending the use of their prescription drugs to afford necessary medical care.
The research indicates that approximately 82 million individuals, spanning various income levels, are reducing spending on utilities, minimizing driving to save on fuel, and implementing other measures to cover healthcare costs. The study also highlighted that individuals are borrowing money and cutting back on utilities as strategies to manage medical expenses.

These findings emerge at a time when Americans are already grappling with substantial increases in gasoline and energy prices. These elevated costs, exacerbated by geopolitical events like the Iran war, are intensifying an existing affordability crisis.
Furthermore, millions are contending with higher health insurance premiums. This situation has been aggravated by the expiration of Affordable Care Act tax credits at the end of the previous year.
The practice of budget cutting to cover healthcare needs is even more prevalent among uninsured Americans. The research shows that over 60% of this group reported making at least one financial sacrifice, such as borrowing funds, to pay for medical services.
The financial strain of healthcare costs is also impacting major life decisions. Nearly 10% of adults, which translates to about 24 million people, state that health expenses have compelled them to delay their retirement plans. Beyond retirement, Americans are making other significant postponements, including delaying career changes, refraining from purchasing new homes, and putting off starting or expanding their families.
