SouthernWorldwide.com – Newly released files from the Pentagon have revealed that the astronauts of NASA’s Apollo 17 mission in 1972 reported observing multiple unidentified objects and lights in space.
These revelations are part of a larger release of over 100 declassified documents concerning Unidentified Anomalous Phenomena (UAP), which the Defense Department made public on a new website.
One specific document includes a NASA photograph taken during the Apollo 17 mission in December 1972. The image clearly shows “three ‘dots’ in a triangular formation in the lower right quadrant of the lunar sky,” according to a caption provided by the Defense Department.
While the Pentagon stated there is no definitive consensus on the nature of this anomaly, a preliminary analysis suggests it might be a “physical object.”
Beyond the photographic evidence, the astronauts also described witnessing bright, tumbling sparks and jagged fragments that eerily resembled fireworks.

Pilot Ronald Evans was quoted in a released transcript from the Pentagon, stating, “Now we’ve got a few very bright particles or fragments or something that go drifting by as we maneuver.”
Pilot Harrison Schmitt further elaborated on the visual spectacle, reporting, “There’s a whole bunch of big ones on my window down there — just bright. It looks like the Fourth of July out of Ron’s window.”
Mission commander Eugene Cernan also reported difficulties sleeping due to observing flashing lights, which he likened to the powerful beam of an “imposing” train headlight.
The Pentagon’s summary indicates that “Over the next three hours, Cernan described observing several flashing, rotating phenomenon that he assessed as corresponding to physical objects in space rather than a purely optical phenomenon.”
The released documents also contain a transcript from the debriefing of the Apollo 11 crew in 1969. During this debriefing, astronaut Buzz Aldrin recounted several unusual observations from his mission.
Aldrin described an encounter early in the mission, stating, “The first unusual thing that we saw I guess was one day out or something pretty close to the moon. It had a sizeable dimension to it, so we put the monocular on it.”
Similar to Cernan’s experience on Apollo 17, Aldrin also mentioned seeing flashing lights while attempting to rest.
“I was trying to go to sleep with all the lights out. I observed what I thought were little flashes inside the cabin, spaced a couple of minutes apart,” Aldrin recalled.
He also noted seeing “a fairly bright light source which we tentatively ascribed to a possible laser.”
The Pentagon has indicated that further documents and videos related to UAP will be released on an ongoing basis.
