Auditor in Red State Reports Surge in Fraud Tips Amidst Focus on State Employee Waste

SouthernWorldwide.com – Nebraska State Auditor Mike Foley has reported an unprecedented surge in fraud tips, including allegations of taxpayer waste by state employees. This crackdown on fraud has garnered national attention, with the Trump administration, under Vice President JD Vance, launching a task force to combat such issues.

“It’s just extraordinary the explosion of phone calls and allegations and emails and so forth that are pouring into my office,” Foley stated. He noted that increased media focus on the matter only amplifies the influx of tips.

Foley emphasized that his office welcomes these calls and actively works to identify the most legitimate cases for investigation. The trend, he observes, is clearly on the rise.

A significant area of concern highlighted by Foley involves the misuse of state vehicles. Many of these vehicles are now equipped with GPS trackers, providing precise data on their whereabouts during work hours.

These trackers have revealed instances of state vehicles being used for trips to liquor stores, personal medical appointments, and other private errands across the state. This improper usage, Foley explained, results in substantial and unjustified expenses for taxpayers.

The Nebraska Examiner previously reported on Foley’s office’s review of GPS data from 45 state fleet vehicles. The findings indicated alleged misuse for trips to retail outlets, restaurants, medical facilities, and relatives’ residences, as well as unauthorized commuting and other private errands.

Foley also issued a press release detailing a “disturbing uptick” in alleged financial improprieties within local governments statewide. This release highlighted eight recent investigations into suspected misuse of public funds, questionable reimbursements, and potential fraud.

He cited numerous examples, including contractors overcharging or double-billing the state. State employees have also been found to misuse state vehicles and assets, and contractors have billed for hours not worked. Similarly, employees have claimed payment for time spent elsewhere, including at other employment. Public school districts have also been implicated in extravagant spending of public funds.

Foley stressed that establishing the right tone starts at the top of government leadership. His efforts to address waste, fraud, and abuse have placed him in a challenging position, leading to a public disagreement with Nebraska Governor Jim Pillen.

This conflict centers on a no-bid state contract, valued at approximately $2 million, which Foley alleges Governor Pillen improperly awarded to a consultant with ties to the governor. Nebraska law typically mandates public bidding for contracts exceeding $50,000, with exceptions for declared emergencies.

Foley stated that no emergency existed and that the administration later claimed the consultant secured hundreds of millions in grant awards. However, he asserted that the grant applications were filed by others before the consultant was even involved in the project. He views this as a serious abuse that sets a detrimental precedent, implying that if the governor can bypass rules, other state employees might feel empowered to do the same.

Governor Pillen’s administration has denied any wrongdoing, defending the contract as necessary for quickly pursuing economic development opportunities and federal funding.

Foley has referred the matter to law enforcement for further investigation, noting that his office’s primary role is conducting audits and identifying potential violations.

He expressed that Nebraska is regrettably a high-tax state, and citizens are frustrated with the high tax burden, especially when they perceive that their money is not being spent properly. He believes taxpayers are relying on his office to identify such issues, and he asserts they are performing well in this regard.

Foley underscored the necessity of consequences for abuses discovered. He stated that consequences are indeed occurring, with many individuals losing their jobs due to misuse of government credit cards or other assets. Some cases have led to further legal complications, infractions, and even jail sentences, with several individuals having been incarcerated for abusing and stealing public funds.
