SouthernWorldwide.com – With Graham Platner facing significant pressure to withdraw from his Senate campaign following rape allegations that surfaced on Monday, Troy Jackson, a long-standing Maine Democrat, filed paperwork on Tuesday, positioning himself to enter the U.S. Senate race should the Democratic nomination become vacant.

Leading Democratic figures, including Senate Minority Leader Chuck Schumer of New York, have rescinded their support for Platner and urged him to end his candidacy. Platner has vehemently denied the allegations, labeling them “categorically false,” and has maintained his position in the race.

According to Maine law, Platner has until Monday, July 13, to withdraw his candidacy if Democrats intend to replace him on the November ballot. Should he step aside before this deadline, the state Democratic Party will then have until July 27 to select a new nominee.

Jackson, who recently lost the Democratic gubernatorial primary, indicated his interest in the Senate race by submitting a statement of candidacy to the Federal Election Commission. He later used social media to condemn the allegations against Platner while clarifying that he has not yet made a definitive decision about seeking the nomination.

PLATNER CAMPAIGN ACCUSED OF MANIPULATING REPLACEMENT CHOICE

“While I have not yet made any final decisions, I am deeply humbled by the overwhelming support and encouragement I have received,” Jackson stated. “I am currently evaluating the most effective way to advance our progressive agenda and the political revolution for the working class that Mainers are striving for.”

Jackson and Platner ran campaigns that were closely aligned in their progressive stances and frequently appeared together at campaign events throughout the 2026 election cycle. Both candidates advocated for a progressive platform and garnered the endorsement of Senator Bernie Sanders of Vermont.

CALL FOR PLATNER’S WITHDRAWAL FOLLOWING ALLEGATIONS

Following the accusations leveled against Platner, Our Revolution, the progressive political organization founded by Sanders after his 2016 presidential campaign, withdrew its endorsement of Platner. Instead, the organization has thrown its support behind Jackson, whom it had also endorsed during his gubernatorial campaign.

“We have days, not weeks, to ensure a genuine progressive is on this ballot,” stated Joseph Geevarghese, Executive Director of Our Revolution. “If we fail to organize now, we risk the Democratic establishment imposing a corporate placeholder on Maine, believing they know best. We will not allow this to happen.”

Jackson’s connections with Sanders extend back over a decade. He was among the select few Democratic National Committee superdelegates who endorsed Sanders over Hillary Clinton during the 2016 Democratic presidential primary. Subsequently, he served as Sanders’ political director in Maine, introducing him at campaign rallies across the state.

Sanders later reciprocated this support by endorsing Jackson’s gubernatorial campaign and campaigning alongside him.

“Fighting for the working class of Maine is not a new endeavor for Troy,” Sanders remarked during a campaign rally. “This is what he has dedicated his life to as a logger and as a member of the Maine state legislature. Troy understands the realities faced by the working class in Maine because he is a part of it.”

A fifth-generation logger and a prominent labor Democrat in Maine, Jackson dedicated over two decades to the state Legislature. His tenure included six years as president of the Maine Senate, a position he relinquished in 2024.

During his gubernatorial campaign, his platform encompassed proposals for universal childcare, Medicare for All, and the establishment of a Department of Affordable Housing. He also secured endorsements from more than 20 labor unions, reinforcing his image as a progressive champion for the working class.

Despite his progressive political leanings, Jackson has a history of winning elections in a region of Maine that predominantly votes Republican. He represented the northern Aroostook County, a largely rural district that has consistently favored President Donald Trump by significant margins in recent presidential elections.

Jackson has asserted that his electoral success is attributable to his focus on working-class economic issues rather than adherence to partisan labels.
