SouthernWorldwide.com – The Indiana Fever and Caitlin Clark have faced a challenging start to the 2026 WNBA season.

Following an extended absence due to injury in 2025, significant expectations were placed on Clark’s return to her rookie season form for 2026. However, despite a promising beginning, the 24-year-old superstar has experienced an uncharacteristically inconsistent and shaky period of performance.

She began the year by scoring over 20 points in five consecutive games. This impressive streak was followed by a slump where she failed to reach that scoring mark in the subsequent four games.

Even with a strong showing against the Golden State Valkyries, where she recorded 22 points, nine assists, and shot 44% from three-point range, Clark has struggled to maintain that momentum. In the rematch against the Valkyries, she committed five turnovers. Her performance dipped further on May 30th against the Portland Fire, where she managed only six points.

CAITLIN CLARK HELD TO JUST SIX POINTS IN FEVER’S BRUTAL BLOWOUT LOSS TO FIRE

Saturday’s defeat against the New York Liberty served as a clear illustration of Clark’s recent struggles. She scored only 10 points, shooting 28.6% from the field and 33.3% from beyond the arc, while committing three turnovers and accumulating five fouls. Nevertheless, she demonstrated her ability to contribute in other areas, dishing out nine assists and grabbing seven rebounds.

Leading into Monday’s game, Clark had a difficult stretch, making only 14 of her 50 field goal attempts in the Fever’s recent contests. More notably, she struggled from long distance, hitting just 6 of her 22 three-point attempts.

With the Fever holding a 5-5 record, Monday night’s game against the Washington Mystics presented a crucial opportunity to regain their footing. Clark seized this moment to do just that.

CAITLIN CLARK DEFENDS COACH STEPHANIE WHITE AFTER SIDELINE CONFRONTATION SPARKS DEBATE

Clark started the game strong, scoring 10 points in the first quarter with a 2-for-5 shooting performance from three-point range. However, Coach Stephanie White opted to keep her on the bench for a significant portion of the second quarter, limiting her playing time to under four minutes. Despite this limited role, Clark managed to make an impact with a remarkable pass leading to a Myisha Hines-Allen layup.

In the second half, she showcased her signature shooting ability once more. With seven minutes remaining in the third quarter, Clark sank a 25-foot jump shot while being fouled by Cassandre Prosper, who interfered with her landing. The foul was not ruled flagrant, and Clark successfully converted the rare four-point play.

Although the Fever had established a considerable lead at that point, the Mystics mounted a comeback, narrowing the deficit to just two points by the middle of the fourth quarter and then to one point with a minute left on the clock. A loose ball foul allowed the Mystics to take a one-point lead. Clark, however, drew contact in the lane, earning two free throws that could have put the Fever back in front. She unfortunately missed both attempts.

Despite her shooting woes, Clark found other ways to contribute. Following a Mystics turnover, Clark delivered a precise half-court pass to Aliyah Boston, who made a layup to give the Fever a 75-74 lead.

The Mystics quickly responded, regaining the lead at 76-75 after a late foul. Then came the decisive play. Sophie Cunningham executed a long, cross-court pass to Clark on an inbounds play. Clark then buried a 31-foot jumper, securing the 78-76 victory for the Fever.

This performance marked a significant return to form for Clark after a series of inconsistent games. She finished with 19 points on 7-of-16 shooting, including 4-of-10 from three-point range, along with five assists and a steal, capped by the incredible game-winning shot.

With this victory, the Fever improved their season record to 6-5. Their next game is scheduled for Thursday against the Chicago Sky.
