Can Alkaline Water Really Boost Your Health? Experts Weigh In

SouthernWorldwide.com – Alkaline water has emerged as a topic of discussion, presented as a potential alternative to regular drinking water.

Numerous well-known personalities, including Gwyneth Paltrow, Mark Wahlberg, and Jennifer Aniston, have endorsed alkaline water in various promotional campaigns. However, the question remains whether these purported benefits hold any scientific weight. Experts indicate that the scientific evidence is currently inconclusive.

Water marketed as alkaline water may contain added minerals such as calcium and magnesium. According to the Mayo Clinic, these minerals are added to help the water achieve an alkaline pH level. A pH of 7 is considered neutral, while a level above 7 is alkaline and a level below 7 is acidic.

Plain tap water typically has a lower pH compared to alkaline water. This difference has led some individuals to suggest that consuming alkaline water can help neutralize acidity within the body.

There are also claims that alkaline water could aid in preventing certain health conditions, such as cancer and stroke, as noted by the Mayo Clinic. Some studies have also indicated that alkaline water might contribute to slowing bone loss, potentially due to the inclusion of calcium.

Furthermore, other research suggests that a combination of alkaline water and a plant-based Mediterranean diet could offer relief from acid reflux. Several studies have specifically pointed to alkaline water alone as being effective in improving the symptoms of gastroesophageal reflux disease (GERD).

However, the Mayo Clinic emphasizes that further research is crucial to substantiate these claims and to confirm whether any observed benefits are sustained over time.

In a publication from Harvard Medical School, Dr. Howard E. LeWine, chief medical editor of Harvard Health Publishing, acknowledged that potential benefits might exist, but only on a temporary basis.

“Because the fluid in the stomach is highly acidic, once regular or alkaline water reaches the stomach, there will be minimal difference in the resulting stomach fluid pH,” he explained.

“It might be possible to temporarily increase the stomach fluid pH by drinking a large amount of alkaline water, but this effect would be short-lived. Even if you consumed enough alkaline water to slightly raise your blood pH, your kidneys would quickly intervene to restore the balance of your blood pH.”

For instance, alkaline water might provide temporary relief from heartburn caused by acid reflux, but the effects are not expected to be long-lasting. Dr. LeWine suggested that more effective alternatives, such as antacids, are available.

The physician also issued a caution regarding the consumption of alkaline water for individuals taking proton pump inhibitors (PPIs), which are medications that block stomach acid production.

The Mayo Clinic further noted that alkaline water has been associated with safety concerns, particularly when the water’s pH level exceeds 9.8. This elevated pH can lead to dangerously high levels of potassium in the blood, a condition known as hyperkalemia.

Dr. LeWine echoed these concerns, stating that alkaline water “could potentially result in an increased blood pH, which can disrupt the normal blood levels of essential chemicals like potassium, especially in individuals with kidney disease.”

While enhancing water with minerals can be beneficial for reducing bodily acidity, experts suggest that the most effective approach is to adopt fundamental dietary habits.

This involves centering meals around whole, unprocessed foods and significantly reducing the intake of excess sugar, caffeine, and processed or fried foods, as these can exacerbate acidity in the body.

“Vegetables, fruits, healthy fats like omega-3s, lean protein, and fiber are the key components that truly help in keeping acid out of the body,” stated DeCicco.

For individuals experiencing acid reflux issues, she recommends consulting a doctor and implementing beneficial lifestyle changes. These include maintaining consistent meal timings throughout the day, avoiding lying down immediately after eating, and steering clear of highly acidic food items.
