SouthernWorldwide.com – Customs and Border Protection (CBP) has achieved a historic milestone this spring, announcing it has reached a record high of 21,471 agents. This figure represents the largest workforce in the agency’s 102-year history.
Agency leadership has indicated that these efforts are far from over, with plans to further expand the personnel.
This staffing record serves as another key indicator of the Trump administration’s commitment to addressing border security issues.
The administration’s tenure has already seen a significant decrease in immigration levels. In the first year and a half of President Donald Trump’s term, immigration dropped by over 87% compared to October 2024 levels.
Congressional Republicans have also played a role in bolstering the agency’s capabilities. They have allocated substantial funding to CBP through the “Big Beautiful Bill” and subsequent efforts to secure funding for the Department of Homeland Security until the end of the administration.
These legislative measures provided $64 billion and $26 billion to CBP, respectively. A considerable portion of the latter bill is specifically earmarked for increasing agency manpower.
“Our focus is on bringing in top talent and supporting our agents so they can succeed,” stated Bright, an agency official.
To achieve its personnel goals, the agency has implemented competitive salaries, comprehensive benefits, and attractive hiring incentives. These incentives can reportedly reach up to $60,000 for agents in designated eligible locations, according to CBP officials.
The agency is particularly keen on attracting former U.S. servicemembers to join its ranks.
U.S. Border Patrol Chief Rosario Vasquez believes that the record-breaking staffing levels are a testament to the success of these targeted recruitment strategies.
“This record-setting achievement highlights the effectiveness of our recruitment efforts,” Vasquez commented.
“We are building a stronger workforce every day, and our progress toward 25,000 agents will further enhance our ability to protect our borders and serve the nation,” she added, underscoring the agency’s ongoing commitment to growth and operational effectiveness.
