SouthernWorldwide.com – Senator Mitch McConnell, R-Ky., has broken his silence regarding his recent hospitalization, revealing the circumstances that led to his absence from the Senate.
In a detailed statement released on Sunday evening, McConnell explained that a fall he experienced last month was linked to his childhood battle with polio. He stated that he was “briefly unconscious” during the incident, as detailed in an open letter to the people of Kentucky. While he was recovering, he also contracted a “mild case of pneumonia.”
McConnell clarified that his doctors have confirmed he did not sustain any broken bones or suffer a concussion. He also stated that he did not have a heart attack, stroke, or any tumors or hemorrhages.

However, the exact timing of his return to the Senate remains uncertain, a fact that McConnell himself acknowledged.
“As much as it frustrates me, this process takes time. And on the advice of my doctors, I won’t be able to return to the Senate floor to vote quite yet,” McConnell stated. “But rest assured that, in the meantime, I’m not taking a break from the Senate business that matters to you.”
His attending physician noted that McConnell has “experienced several falls throughout the year that have been attributed to his post-polio condition.”
MCCONNELL WAS FOUND ‘UNCONSCIOUS’ IN HOME LAST MONTH AS CONDITION REMAINS UNKNOWN
“He was admitted to the hospital four weeks ago after falling at home and sustaining minor injuries,” McConnell’s doctor said.
“A comprehensive evaluation by a multidisciplinary team determined that he had no fractures, cardiac abnormalities, stroke, tumor, or hemorrhage,” his doctor continued. “Early in his hospitalization, he developed pneumonia, which responded rapidly to antibiotic treatment.”
This latest health update on the long-serving lawmaker comes in the wake of the sudden death of Senator Lindsey Graham, R-S.C., who had recently returned from a trip to Ukraine. The news of Graham’s passing was a significant shock.
McConnell’s absence, combined with Graham’s unexpected death, leaves the Senate with two fewer crucial votes. This occurs during a critical period as Congress races to finalize key aspects of President Donald Trump’s agenda, with deadlines approaching in July and early August.

The situation has also fueled over three weeks of speculation regarding the reasons behind the sidelining of the longest-serving Republican leader in Senate history.
For several weeks, McConnell’s office did not disclose the true nature of his condition or explain the circumstances that led to his hospitalization. This lack of transparency generated considerable online discussion, with some rumors suggesting McConnell was in a vegetative state.
Adding to the intrigue was the leak of emergency dispatch audio from June 14, the day he was hospitalized. The audio revealed that the long-time Senate Republican was “unconscious” and potentially experiencing a heart attack.
“During the trip, she met with a number of people, including the U.S. ambassador,” her office said. “The Senator’s health did not warrant an immediate return to the U.S.”
McConnell’s statement did not directly address the various speculations surrounding his hospitalization. However, he did reiterate his commitment to returning to the Senate as soon as he is able.
“You’re right to expect your representatives to work hard for you. And part of my decision to retire at the end of my term this coming January was being honest about the demands of Senate work,” McConnell stated. “But I still have unfinished business to complete on your behalf, and I have every intention of finishing the job you elected me to do.”
