SouthernWorldwide.com – A terminally ill man, Dean Pennell, 63, has finally married his longtime love, Kay Beaman, 62, in a heartwarming ceremony at Colchester Hospital in Essex, England. This poignant union took place on June 18, fulfilling a lifelong wish for Pennell, who has terminal cancer.

The couple first met 24 years ago through their children in Basildon, Essex. Pennell had initially proposed to Beaman when their relationship began, but wedding plans were continually deferred. The primary reason for the delay was their commitment to providing for their combined 10 children.

Pennell, a former electroplater, was recently given the devastating news that he had only weeks to live. This prognosis prompted the couple to expedite their wedding plans, bringing the ceremony forward from their original intention to marry later this year.

Beaman expressed her profound joy, stating, “I am absolutely elated. We have waited a long time, and it’s so special to be able to celebrate our marriage here, with our families.” She further elaborated on the financial constraints that had previously prevented them from marrying, noting, “Dean proposed when we first got together — but with 10 children between us, money would not allow.”

The wedding, though a hospital affair, was a significant and emotional event. It was attended by their supportive family and friends, including all 10 of their children and some of their 18 grandchildren. The hospital staff at Colchester Hospital played a crucial role in making the day possible, organizing the entire event in less than a week.

Beaman shared the emotional lead-up to the wedding, recounting how Pennell was incredibly excited. “It was very hard for Dean,” she said. “He had been so excited in the lead-up to the wedding, and I would get a phone call from him at the hospital every morning telling me how many days there were to go until the wedding.”

Despite his poor health, Pennell was determined to participate fully in the ceremony. “When the day came, he was adamant, as difficult as it was, that he was going to stand up for as much of the ceremony as possible — and we had a lovely day,” Beaman added. She noted that her new husband was exhausted afterward but is now back home, and they are focused on “living life to suit us.”

Pennell himself reflected on the day, calling it “absolutely brilliant” and praising the staff’s dedication. “The staff worked really hard to organize the wedding,” he stated.

Lucy Everett, the ward manager, shared her sentiments about the event. “It has been a pleasure to be able to help Dean and Kay,” she said. “It’s rare that we get to celebrate a wedding at Colchester Hospital — it’s a first for me.”

In a touching gesture, the East Suffolk and North Essex Foundation Trust presented the newlyweds with a special clock. This clock was engraved with the exact time Dean and Kay exchanged their vows, serving as a lasting memento of their special day.
