A spokesperson for Senator McConnell, David Popp, stated that the senator remains actively engaged with his staff on legislative matters and issues pertaining to Kentucky. However, his participation in voting this week is not possible due to his ongoing recovery.

The specific reason for Senator McConnell’s hospitalization earlier this month has not been publicly disclosed.

This is not the first time Senator McConnell has been hospitalized this year. He previously spent eight days in the hospital after experiencing symptoms similar to the flu.

McConnell, who holds the record for the longest tenure as a Senate party leader in U.S. history, has been serving in the Senate since the early part of 1985.

Last year, McConnell announced his decision not to seek an eighth term in the Senate.

The upcoming general election for the U.S. Senate seat in Kentucky features Republican candidate U.S. Rep. Andy Barr, also from Kentucky. On the Democratic side, the candidate is former Kentucky state Rep. Charles Booker.

In recent years, Senator McConnell has experienced a number of health-related incidents.

In December 2024, he sustained a wrist sprain after a fall during a Republican luncheon. Prior to that, in March 2023, he was hospitalized for a concussion and consequently missed several weeks of work following a fall in a Washington hotel. Upon his return, he experienced two instances during press conferences in the summer where he froze, appearing disoriented before being assisted by colleagues and staff.

Senator McConnell had polio during his early childhood, and he has openly discussed facing some challenges as an adult with walking and ascending stairs. Beyond his fall in 2023, he also fell at his Kentucky home in 2019, which resulted in surgery for a fractured shoulder.
