SouthernWorldwide.com – A routine traffic stop near the U.S. southern border escalated into a dramatic chase, ultimately leading to the discovery of nearly two dozen individuals, including several minors, found concealed within the sleeping area of a semitruck.
The incident, captured in a video released by the Texas Department of Public Safety (DPS) spokesman Lt. Chris Olivarez, depicts a suspected human smuggler abandoning a Volvo semitruck and attempting to flee on foot as Texas state troopers pursued him. The encounter began when a state trooper initiated a traffic stop on Monday evening in Webb County, South Texas.
According to Lt. Olivarez, the driver was apprehended and “immediately arrested” by Texas officials after his attempt to evade capture on foot. A subsequent search of the semitruck revealed 20 individuals who were being illegally transported, hidden in the vehicle’s sleeping compartment.
The footage shows troopers pulling back the curtain of the truck’s cabin, revealing the cramped conditions where the individuals were hidden. The group remained silent during the questioning by troopers, responding only with nods. The DPS confirmed that four minors from Mexico and Guatemala were among those discovered.

The driver of the semitruck has been identified as Miguel Angel Velazquez Chavez, a 25-year-old Mexican national. He faces charges of evading arrest and smuggling persons and is currently being held at the Webb County Jail.
The 20 individuals, including the four minors, have been turned over to U.S. Border Patrol. The DPS Criminal Investigations Division is continuing its investigation into the smuggling operation.
This event occurs amidst ongoing efforts by Texas officials to combat human smuggling incidents, even as some reports indicate a reduction in attempted border crossings under the current administration.
In a separate, but related incident in nearby Maverick County, Texas, troopers apprehended Yoisdelvis Nunez Acosta, a Cuban national, following a high-speed chase that concluded with a PIT maneuver. Acosta fled into nearby brush but was quickly taken into custody. Alexander Rodriguez Acosta, an American national, was also arrested in connection with the same smuggling operation. Both men have been charged with six counts of smuggling persons, and six individuals from Mexico and Vietnam were referred to U.S. Border Patrol.
Both smuggling attempts took place along a known route used for human trafficking near the southern border. This incident echoes a tragic event in 2022, when law enforcement discovered 53 deceased migrants abandoned inside a sweltering truck in San Antonio. Authorities stated that the migrants had suffered from extreme heat exposure due to a lack of adequate ventilation and water during their transport, marking it as one of the deadliest human smuggling incidents in U.S. history.
Former Trump border czar Tom Homan has consistently highlighted that “illegal immigration is not a victimless crime.”
In response to critiques of the Trump administration’s border policies, Homan remarked in April, “If they wore my shoes for 40 years, and talked to a 9-year-old girl that got raped multiple times, or stood in the back of a tractor trailer with 19 dead aliens at my feet, including a 5-year-old boy that baked to death, if they understood the atrocities that happened on the open border, I think their opinion would change.”
He further emphasized his view, stating, “Where President Trump had the most secure border in the lifetime of this nation, right now, lives are being saved. He’s saving thousands of lives a year because he has a secure border.”
