SouthernWorldwide.com – Senate Minority Leader Chuck Schumer sidestepped persistent questions regarding controversies surrounding Democrat Graham Platner, instead reaffirming his support for the embattled Senate candidate.
Platner, a Marine veteran and oyster farmer, has recently been embroiled in a series of scandals. These include criticism over a tattoo with perceived Nazi imagery, resurfaced Reddit posts containing inflammatory remarks about veterans, and reports of sexually explicit messages exchanged with other women while he was married.
Speaking with journalists in the Capitol on Tuesday, Schumer was directly asked if he was satisfied with Platner’s explanations for these controversies. He responded by stating, “I met with Graham Platner today, we’re going to beat [Sen.] Susan Collins and take back the Senate.”
Schumer faced multiple follow-up questions about his continued support for Platner, especially since his endorsement predated the emergence of these scandals. He was also questioned whether the Democrats’ backing of Platner could weaken their position when criticizing Republican Senate candidate Ken Paxton, who has faced allegations of a similar nature.
The Senate Minority Leader attempted to redirect the conversation to other topics, asking, “Any other subjects you got?” However, reporters persisted in focusing on his support for Platner.
After being pressed for a fifth time, Schumer finally reiterated, “As I said, I endorsed Graham Platner.” He then repeated his objective, “We’re going to beat Susan Collins and take back the Senate,” before departing.
Platner’s campaign has been marked by significant controversy. Beyond the aforementioned scandals, he faced scrutiny for a tattoo identified as a “Totenkopf,” a symbol associated with Nazi SS units, which he later covered with a different tattoo.
The Democratic candidate has drawn considerable backlash for vulgar messages posted on a now-deleted Reddit account under the username “P-hustle.” These posts included crude jokes, such as one about masturbating in public portable toilets.
In addition to these remarks, Platner reportedly referred to himself as a communist, characterized rural White individuals as “racist” and “stupid,” and made disparaging comments about Black individuals regarding tipping practices.
It was also recently revealed that Platner maintains an active account on Kik, an anonymous chatting platform known for its relaxed identification protocols, which have been exploited for the dissemination of child sexual abuse material.
Previously, Schumer had endorsed Maine Democratic Governor Janet Mills to challenge Senator Susan Collins. However, Mills withdrew from the race in April, citing insufficient financial backing for her campaign.

Mills’ departure left Platner as the leading candidate in the Democratic primary for the Senate seat.
