SouthernWorldwide.com – Clint Dempsey, a veteran of three World Cups for the United States Men’s National Team (USMNT), has shared his thoughts on the recently unveiled 2026 USMNT roster. The announcement, made in Manhattan, confirmed previous reports and has already prompted discussions, with manager Mauricio Pochettino providing early justifications for his selections.

Dempsey acknowledged that the roster contains “some surprises” and appears to have a “defensive-heavy” approach, particularly at the right-back position. However, he maintained an optimistic outlook, emphasizing that he is not the one making the selections. He believes the team is capable of performing well, but stressed the need for significant contributions from key players such as Chris Richards, Antonee Robinson, Tyler Adams, Weston McKennie, Christian Pulisic, and Folarin Balogun. While acknowledging the potential of other forwards and players, Dempsey highlighted these individuals as standing out on the roster.

He specifically mentioned Diego Luna and Tanner Tessman, whose omissions from the squad came as a shock to some. Dempsey expressed empathy for players who are naturally disappointed to be left out, stating that one “feels bad” for them. Despite these exclusions, Dempsey was keen to recognize the value that players making their first World Cup roster bring to the team.

Dempsey also pointed to Alex Zendejas as a player who earned his spot through strong performances, notably for Club América. He praised Zendejas’s left foot, his finishing abilities, and his skill in assisting and delivering crosses. Dempsey recalled Zendejas’s impressive goal against Japan in a recent friendly match.

Regarding Gio Reyna, Dempsey suggested that his inclusion might be a surprise to some, but argued that Reyna’s form with the national team, in terms of his production rate and overall contribution, is among the best. He believes Reyna’s performance metrics are high and that he offers significant value to the team.

With FIFA’s deadline for roster changes on June 1, it is unlikely that the 26-man squad selected by Pochettino will change. This group will have the distinct honor of representing their country on home soil during the World Cup.

Dempsey recalled his childhood dreams of wearing the Stars and Stripes in a World Cup, a dream he realized multiple times. Now, he is focused on the team’s performance in front of a home crowd. He expressed his hope that the team will have a strong start against Paraguay in their opening Group D match on June 12 in Los Angeles.

He drew a parallel to the enthusiasm seen for the men’s and women’s hockey teams during the Winter Olympics, highlighting the importance of securing fan support early on. Dempsey believes that connecting with the fans can create a crucial “12th man” effect, which is essential for pushing the team through challenging moments in big games.

THE ABBOTT DREAM TEAM

In a separate initiative, Dempsey is collaborating with Abbott and Real Madrid for the second consecutive year on the “Abbott Dream Team” program. This program aims to provide young soccer players in the U.S., aged 18-19, with an exceptional development opportunity alongside one of the world’s most renowned soccer clubs, Real Madrid, in Madrid.

Selected participants will train under the guidance of Real Madrid coaches at the club’s facilities. They will also experience unique opportunities such as attending a match at the iconic Bernabéu Stadium and meeting club legends. The Real Madrid medical team will offer insights into the latest advancements in sports health and nutrition, helping the young athletes better understand their bodies, cultivate healthier habits, and achieve peak performance both on and off the field.

Dempsey expressed his enthusiasm for the program, stating that it’s about “giving back” and providing opportunities for young people to pursue their dreams. As a father himself, he understands the dedication required to support a child’s aspirations, from attending practices to providing the best possible environment for success. He views the Abbott Dream Team tryouts as a chance for players to gain valuable experience, regardless of the outcome, simply by putting themselves out there and being evaluated by Real Madrid coaches.

He commended the players for “betting on themselves” and for their courage in participating in the tryouts. Real Madrid legend Marcelo will also serve as a mentor for this year’s Abbott Dream Team, joining Dempsey in supporting the aspiring young footballers.

Tryouts have already been held in Miami, Washington, D.C., and Houston, with Dempsey present in Houston. Future tryouts are scheduled for Kansas City on June 2, Los Angeles on June 4, and Chicago on June 9.
