SouthernWorldwide.com – US soccer legend Cobi Jones, who holds the record for the most appearances for the U.S. men’s national team with 164 caps, shared his thoughts on what message he would deliver to the current USMNT squad ahead of the 2026 World Cup.
Jones represented the United States in the 1992 Summer Olympics and participated in three World Cups, including the 1994 tournament when it was last held in the U.S. Having experienced the pressure and pride of wearing the national colors on numerous occasions, he understands the significance of this major international event.
The former USMNT star reflected on his career, highlighting the sense of pride he felt in representing his country. He recalled a time when many doubted the potential of American players in the global soccer landscape.
“Playing for the U.S., the national team, the Olympic team through the years, I’ve always had a sense of pride,” Jones explained. “There was always a time where people thought soccer wasn’t for Americans, so for me to be part of that generation to prove them wrong and turn the tide, so to speak, and have it where people accept American players and want American players on their team gives me that pride.”
Looking ahead to the 2026 World Cup, which will be co-hosted by the United States, Canada, and Mexico, Jones expressed his hopes for the USMNT’s performance. He would be pleased to see the team successfully navigate their group stage matches.
The USMNT is set to begin their World Cup campaign on Friday in Los Angeles. Their opening match will be against Paraguay at 9 p.m. ET.
Jones’ perspective comes from a deep understanding of the sport’s evolution in the United States and the legacy built by players like himself. His message to the current generation would likely emphasize the opportunity they have to inspire a nation and solidify American soccer’s place on the world stage.
