SouthernWorldwide.com – Dallas Cowboys offensive coordinator Brian Schottenheimer has addressed the absence of wide receiver George Pickens from the team’s voluntary offseason practices, stating that the player is “taking care of his business” and that communication lines remain open.

Pickens, who signed his $27.3 million franchise tag approximately a month ago, has not yet joined his teammates for the initial phase of offseason workouts. However, he is not obligated to attend these voluntary sessions until the mandatory minicamp scheduled from June 16-18.

“I communicated with (Pickens) yesterday,” Schottenheimer stated on Thursday. “He has a football camp this weekend that he is participating in. So, our communication is good, and as you are aware, these practices are voluntary, and he is managing his personal affairs.”

The Pro Bowl receiver’s decision to sign the one-year franchise tender came after a two-month period. This contract is valued at three times the amount Pickens earned during his four-year rookie deal, which concluded when he turned 25.

Prior to the NFL Draft in April, Pickens had informed the Cowboys of his intention to sign the franchise tag. This declaration fueled speculation about a potential trade, but the team’s management made it clear that no such plans were in motion. He officially signed the tag about a week after that initial conversation.

Acquired via a trade from the Pittsburgh Steelers last year, Pickens experienced a breakout season, forming a potent receiving duo with CeeDee Lamb. He set career highs in receptions with 93, receiving yards with 1,429, and touchdowns with nine. His performance contributed significantly to one of the NFL’s most effective offenses last season.

CeeDee Lamb is currently in the second year of a substantial four-year contract worth $136 million. This deal positions him as the fourth highest-paid receiver in the NFL, with an average annual value of $34 million.

Team owner and general manager Jerry Jones has previously emphasized the club’s long-term vision for Pickens. Notably, Pickens has spent time during the offseason working out with quarterback Dak Prescott.

“I’m not entirely certain of their specific arrangements,” Schottenheimer commented. “You all know that Dak does an excellent job of coordinating with all the players, whether they are present now, during this time of year, or in the summer. They typically travel to a location to train and throw together. This provides them with an opportunity to refine their timing and chemistry.”
