SouthernWorldwide.com – Danish soccer star Christian Eriksen experienced a medical scare during an international friendly match against Ukraine on Sunday, raising concerns given his history of on-field health incidents.
Eriksen collapsed near midfield during the game, prompting immediate medical attention. Fortunately, the Danish Football Union confirmed that he was conscious and felt well under the circumstances.
The incident led to the abandonment of the match. At the time of Eriksen’s collapse, Denmark was leading Ukraine 2-1 in the 61st minute.
Eriksen, 34, previously played for prominent English Premier League clubs Tottenham and Manchester United before his current stint with VfL Wolfsburg in the 2. Bundesliga.
This event brings back memories of a terrifying incident during the European Championship in June 2021. While playing for Denmark against Finland, Eriksen suffered a cardiac arrest on the pitch in the first half.
Play was immediately halted at Parken Stadium in Copenhagen as Eriksen lay unresponsive on the grass. Medical staff and teammates rushed to his aid, forming a protective circle around him while CPR was administered.
After approximately 10 minutes of medical care, Eriksen was stretchered off the field wearing an oxygen mask. Images circulated at the time showing him awake and appearing to acknowledge the situation.
He was subsequently transferred to a hospital where his condition was stabilized. Following the 2021 incident, Eriksen was fitted with an implantable cardioverter-defibrillator, a device designed to regulate heart rhythm.
Denmark’s team doctor, Morten Boesen, issued a statement confirming that Eriksen’s pacemaker was functioning correctly. He noted that Eriksen was briefly unconscious but regained consciousness rapidly.
“He will not undergo further examinations at the hospital to determine what caused the incident,” Boesen stated. “We are in ongoing contact with him and the doctors at the hospital. But Christian is doing well, and he asked me to send his regards to all the players and tell them that he was okay.”
