SouthernWorldwide.com – Darby Allin continues to solidify his reign as AEW World Champion, successfully defending his title against Sammy Guevara on Saturday night’s “Collision” episode of All Elite Wrestling.
The challenger, Sammy Guevara, who also holds the Ring of Honor tag team championship, had issued a direct challenge to Allin for the AEW World Championship. This challenge emerged as Allin was seemingly poised for a highly anticipated showdown with Maxwell Jacob Friedman (MJF) at the upcoming Double or Nothing event.
Since capturing the championship from MJF, Darby Allin has demonstrated remarkable consistency, marking five consecutive successful title defenses. His previous challengers included formidable opponents such as Tommaso Ciampa, Brody King, Kevin Knight, Pac, and Konosuke Takeshita, and Guevara now joins that list.
The encounter between Allin and Guevara promised a spectacle of high-flying maneuvers, a characteristic of both wrestlers’ styles, even with the inherent risks involved. Guevara attempted to gain a decisive advantage by placing Allin on a table and ascending a ladder, aiming to incapacitate his opponent with a devastating move.
Guevara executed a daring dive from the ladder. However, this ambitious maneuver proved insufficient to overcome Allin’s resilience.
Allin managed to withstand Guevara’s Spanish fly and skillfully evaded a 450 splash from the top rope, which ultimately sent Guevara crashing through a table. Recovering quickly, Allin rolled Guevara back into the ring and delivered a decisive Coffin Drop, securing his victory and retaining the championship.
Mark Briscoe’s Electrifying Return to AEW
Mark Briscoe made a triumphant return to AEW after an absence of several months, following an incident involving an assault by Tomaso Ciampa. He joined forces with Orange Cassidy and Kyle O’Reilly, members of the faction known as The Conglomeration.
Their opponents were Lee Moriarty, Shawn Dean, and Jay Triller, representing Shane Taylor Promotions, in a world trios title elimination match. The atmosphere in Salisbury, Maryland, erupted as Briscoe received the tag. He utilized a chair to neutralize his three adversaries.
Briscoe then delivered a Froggy Bow followed by a Jay Driller, successfully pinning Dean and securing the win for his team. He is now set to confront Ciampa in a no-disqualification match on the upcoming episode of “Collision.” This special broadcast will air on Wednesday, as part of a three-hour combined event with “Dynamite.”
Will Ospreay Addresses Samoa Joe Ahead of Owen Hart Clash
Will Ospreay is slated to face Samoa Joe in the opening round of the Owen Hart Foundation Tournament. This tournament serves as a crucial stepping stone for Ospreay as he aims for a shot at the AEW World Championship at the All In event.
Samoa Joe had been actively attempting to prevent Ospreay from associating with The Death Riders in recent weeks. Ospreay had been training with this group as he worked towards being medically cleared to return to an AEW ring. During “Collision,” Ospreay appeared to have The Death Riders in his corner, while Joe enlisted Katsuyori Shibata and Anthony Bowens to confront him.
On “Collision,” Ospreay addressed Joe directly, stating: “Joe, my apologies for not getting back to any of your messages – been a little bit busy training and getting myself ready for the Owen. Surprise, surprise to see you there in the opening round, matey. It’s gonna be a tough one, but if you can just bear with me for a hot second while I explain to you. Six months of my life got taken away from me, mate. Six months I’ve been sitting in front of a TV screen watching AEW, looking at it, trying to get strength back in my arms, rushing to get back. You know, six months. Six months of frustration, six months of anger and then I finally had my kill shot at Dynasty and I lost. Ever since then, I’ve been struggling with my matches. The doctor even stopped one of them for my own safety. I’m annoyed I didn’t get revenge on Jon (Moxley).
“But I’m more upset at the idea that I can’t be the guy AEW put their trust in once upon a time. Regardless how I feel about Jon, regardless how I feel about The Death Riders, there’s nothing I can say that will make people ever understand. But Jon Moxley, he’s the ace. He’s a soldier for this place and while his methods might be sick, the people that stand opposite of him get elevated. So, what could happen with him in my corner?
“Joe, I got nothing but respect for you – everything you’ve done in this industry. You were in the match that made me want to become a pro wrestler. But no one, no one is stopping me from winning the Owen. And I find it very poetic that the man that took away my old life has given me a second chance at capturing the world championship.”
