SouthernWorldwide.com – A prominent Democratic mayor, who gained national recognition after being arrested during an anti-ICE protest last year, has successfully secured re-election. This victory allows him to continue leading his city for another term.
Mayor Ras Baraka of Newark, New Jersey, decisively surpassed the 50% vote threshold in Tuesday’s election. He was competing against seven other candidates for the mayoral seat, according to reports from the Associated Press.
With Baraka securing a majority of the votes in his bid for a fourth term as the leader of New Jersey’s most populous city, he will not have to participate in a runoff election scheduled for November.
Although Baraka is affiliated with the Democratic Party, mayoral elections in Newark are officially designated as nonpartisan contests. This means candidates are not formally running under their party labels.
Baraka, widely regarded as one of the nation’s most progressive mayors, had previously voiced strong opposition to the reopening of the Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) detention facility located in Newark. This facility was a component of former President Donald Trump’s initiatives targeting illegal immigration.
On May 9, 2025, Mayor Baraka was apprehended by ICE agents just outside the detention facility. His arrest occurred after he attempted, without success, to join a congressional delegation’s scheduled tour of the facility.
The incident involving the mayor’s arrest quickly garnered widespread media coverage, making national headlines across the country.

Following the event, the charges filed against Mayor Baraka were subsequently dropped. He later launched a campaign for the governorship of New Jersey, ultimately finishing in second place behind then-Rep. Mikie Sherrill in the Democratic gubernatorial primary held last year. Mikie Sherrill went on to win the election and become the governor of New Jersey.
