SouthernWorldwide.com – Democratic state Representative Josh Turek has secured his party’s nomination for the U.S. Senate in Iowa, setting the stage to challenge for a key Republican-held seat. Turek, a Paralympian, emerged victorious in the Democratic Senate primary, defeating state Senator Zach Wahls.
The Associated Press reported on Tuesday that Turek will now face off against Republican Representative Ashley Hinson, who easily won her party’s nomination. This race is considered a top target for Democrats as they aim to flip the Republican-controlled Senate seat and influence the balance of power in the upcoming midterm elections.
The outcome of this contest is among a dozen crucial showdowns that will determine whether Republicans can maintain their narrow majority in the Senate. The midterm elections are a significant focal point for both parties as they vie for control.
Turek, identified as a moderate Democrat, successfully flipped a GOP-held Iowa House seat in 2022. His campaign received support from former Transportation Secretary Pete Buttigieg, highlighting his appeal to a broader segment of the electorate.
On the other side, Zach Wahls, a progressive candidate, was endorsed by Senator Elizabeth Warren of Massachusetts. Republicans had drawn comparisons between Wahls and New York City Mayor Zohran Mamdani, suggesting a progressive alignment. The Democratic primary itself garnered considerable national attention and attracted substantial outside funding.
Ashley Hinson, a former television news anchor, is currently serving her third term representing Iowa’s 2nd Congressional District. She defeated former state senator and previous U.S. Senate candidate Jim Carlin in the Republican Senate primary, as confirmed by The Associated Press.
Hinson’s campaign received endorsements from prominent figures, including President Donald Trump, Senate Majority Leader John Thune, and the National Republican Senatorial Committee. Senator Joni Ernst also backed Hinson as she secured her party’s nomination. Hinson, who flipped a Democratic-held seat in 2020, is widely regarded as a rising star within the Republican party.
Iowa, once a crucial battleground state that former President Barack Obama carried in his 2008 and 2012 presidential victories, has trended Republican in recent election cycles. Donald Trump won the state by nine points in 2016, eight points in 2020, and by a significant 13 points in November 2024, indicating a shift in voter allegiance.
Currently, Republicans hold both of Iowa’s Senate seats, with Senators Joni Ernst and Chuck Grassley representing the state. Furthermore, Republicans control all four of Iowa’s congressional districts and most statewide offices, with the exception of the state auditor position.
Despite the state’s Republican leanings, Democrats are expressing optimism heading into the midterm elections. As the party in power, Republicans are expected to face traditional headwinds, including a challenging political climate exacerbated by persistent inflation and high gas prices. These economic factors, coupled with an unpopular war in Iran and sinking approval ratings for former President Trump, could create an environment favorable to the opposition.
Iowa Democrats, in particular, are reportedly energized following their success in flipping two GOP-held state Senate seats during special elections in 2025. This recent victory has bolstered their confidence and strategic approach for the upcoming general election.

The winner of the general election will succeed Senator Joni Ernst, a retired Army Reserve and Iowa National Guard officer who served in the Iraq War. Ernst was first elected to the Senate in 2014, and her campaign that year garnered national attention for her “make ’em squeal” advertisements as she won the high-profile election to replace retiring Democratic Senator Tom Harkin.
