SouthernWorldwide.com – Pop star Dua Lipa has initiated legal action against Samsung, alleging the technology giant illicitly used a copyrighted photograph of her to promote and sell televisions. The lawsuit claims the unauthorized use of her image constitutes copyright infringement, trademark infringement, and a violation of her right of publicity.

The legal filing, submitted in a California federal court on Friday, asserts that Samsung featured an image of Lipa’s face on the packaging of its televisions. This particular photograph, according to the lawsuit, was taken backstage at the Austin City Limits Festival in 2024 and is owned by Lipa.

Through this alleged misuse of her likeness, Lipa contends that Samsung aimed to “improperly capitalize on Ms. Lipa’s hard-earned success to promote and sell Samsung’s products.” The lawsuit further argues that the use of the image deceives consumers into believing Lipa has endorsed the televisions, thereby diluting her brand identity.

The complaint cites an instance where a fan commented on social media about purchasing a TV specifically because Dua Lipa was featured on it. This highlights the perceived impact of her image on consumer purchasing decisions.

Representatives for Dua Lipa have not yet responded to requests for comment regarding the lawsuit. A spokesperson for Samsung stated that the company is unable to comment on ongoing litigation.

According to the legal documents filed by Lipa’s lawyers, the singer became aware of Samsung’s use of her copyrighted image in June 2025. She subsequently demanded that the company cease its use of the photograph. However, the lawsuit alleges that the South Korean electronics manufacturer “repeatedly refused” to comply with her demand.

“Samsung’s response has been dismissive and callous, and the Infringing products remain on the market to this day,” the lawsuit states, emphasizing the ongoing nature of the alleged infringement.

Lipa is seeking damages of up to $15 million in connection with the alleged copyright and trademark violations, as well as the infringement of her right of publicity. The case is expected to proceed in the California federal court.
