SouthernWorldwide.com – The Food and Drug Administration (FDA) has authorized the sale of fruit-flavored e-cigarettes specifically for adult smokers, marking a significant policy change. This decision follows numerous appeals from the vaping industry to the Trump administration.
This move is expected to face opposition from health organizations and parent groups who have consistently highlighted flavors as a primary reason for underage vaping in the United States. However, the FDA’s action coincides with a notable decline in teen vaping rates, reaching a ten-year low.
Manufacturers have been advocating for relaxed restrictions on their products, arguing that e-cigarettes can help mitigate the harm caused by traditional smoking. Smoking is responsible for an estimated 480,000 deaths annually in the U.S. due to conditions like cancer, lung disease, and heart disease.
The newly authorized e-cigarettes will be available in flavors such as mango, blueberry, and two menthol varieties. Glas Inc., a vaping company based in Los Angeles, intends to market these flavors under the names Gold, Sapphire, Classic Menthol, and Fresh Menthol, as stated in the FDA’s announcement.
Previously, the FDA had only approved vaping products in tobacco or menthol flavors. The majority of e-cigarettes that have received regulatory approval originate from major manufacturers, including Juul and Altria.
The FDA clarified that this authorization does not constitute an endorsement or approval of the products. They reiterated that the Glas e-cigarettes are intended solely for adults who are looking to quit or reduce their cigarette consumption.
The FDA suggested that the company’s digital age-verification system is designed to prevent underage access. Users are required to verify their age using a government-issued ID on their mobile phones. The e-cigarettes can only be used when connected via Bluetooth to the verified user’s phone.
The authorization of these new fruity products by the FDA will serve as a “key test case,” according to Kathy Crosby of the Truth Initiative, an organization dedicated to combating tobacco use.

“Ultimately, it is crucial that we remain vigilant in protecting young people, which includes closely monitoring the use of authorized products,” Crosby stated in an email.
The FDA emphasized in its press release that it will “closely monitor how these products are marketed and will act appropriately if the company fails to comply with any applicable statutory or regulatory requirements.” The agency reserves the right to suspend or withdraw authorization if it determines that continued marketing is no longer in the public’s best interest, particularly if there is a significant increase in youth usage or evidence that the product’s benefits no longer outweigh its risks.
During his presidential campaign, Mr. Trump pledged to “save” vaping and received support from e-cigarette companies, shop owners, and vaping enthusiasts.
Under the Biden administration, the FDA rejected over a million marketing applications for candy- and fruit-flavored products. This action was part of a broader effort credited with helping to reduce teen vaping after a surge in 2019. During his first term, Mr. Trump implemented initial flavor restrictions on e-cigarettes and raised the minimum age for purchasing all tobacco products from 18 to 21.
However, the focus on vaping and other tobacco policies has largely taken a backseat under FDA Commissioner Marty Makary, who has prioritized other initiatives such as regulating COVID-19 vaccines, phasing out artificial food dyes, and accelerating the approval of certain innovative drugs.
Industry groups, including the Vapor Technology Association, have recently met with administration officials to advocate for further action on flavored e-cigarettes.
In March, the FDA issued its first-ever guidance for the industry regarding flavors. This guidance indicated that menthol, coffee, mint, and spice flavors could play a role in appealing to adult smokers. The same document also reiterated the risks associated with sweeter flavors, such as fruit, candy, and dessert, which tend to attract teenagers.
Current government data indicates that the vast majority of U.S. teens who vape continue to use unauthorized fruit- and candy-flavored products. These products are technically illegal but remain widely available, often in inexpensive, disposable brands typically imported from China.
