SouthernWorldwide.com – Keisha Lance Bottoms, former Mayor of Atlanta and a past official in the Biden administration, has secured the Democratic nomination for governor in Georgia, a pivotal battleground state in the southeastern U.S.

According to the Associated Press, Bottoms clinched a majority of the votes in Tuesday’s primary. The race featured a broad field of contenders, including Geoff Duncan, a Republican who later switched to the Democratic party and formerly served as Lieutenant Governor; Jason Esteves, a former state senator; Derrick Jackson, a state representative; and Mike Thurmond, who previously held the roles of state labor commissioner and CEO of DeKalb County.

The Democratic party is aiming to end a prolonged period of losses in Georgia, where they have not won a gubernatorial election in almost three decades. The last Democratic governor was Roy Barnes, elected in 1998. Since then, Republicans have maintained a winning streak, with former Governors Sonny Perdue and Nathan Deal, as well as the current Governor Brian Kemp, all achieving electoral success and re-election.

Bottoms had been considered the frontrunner throughout the primary campaign. She faced considerable criticism from her opponents regarding her single term as Atlanta’s mayor, which received mixed reviews. She was elected in 2018 but chose not to seek re-election in 2022. Subsequently, she took on the role of senior advisor and director of the White House Office of Public Engagement under President Joe Biden.

Critics of the former mayor contended that Bottoms’ perceived weaknesses could pose a challenge for Democrats in their efforts to reclaim the governor’s office. This concern arose within a midterm election cycle where the Democratic party was showing significant energy, while Republicans were encountering typical political challenges and a less favorable environment.

This surge in Democratic engagement was evident in the high turnout for early voting in Georgia. Over a million ballots were cast before Election Day, with Democrats demonstrating a notable advantage in voter participation compared to Republicans.
