George Soros-backed Prosecutor Faces Rebuke Over Dismissed Probe

SouthernWorldwide.com – Steve Descano, a prosecutor backed by George Soros, is once again facing intense scrutiny. This time, the focus is on his dismissal of a Justice Department probe into allegations that he offered preferential treatment to undocumented immigrants, which he characterized as “partisan attacks” from President Donald Trump.

Jennifer Harrison, the head of the Victim Rights Reform Council, directly challenged Descano’s assertion in a public response on X. She stated emphatically that the matter had “NOTHING to do with President Trump” and dismissed Descano’s attempt to use it as a fundraising tool, implying he would not receive “Soros blood money.”

The Department of Justice (DOJ) had initiated a civil rights investigation into Descano’s office last week. This “pattern or practice” investigation aimed to determine if federal law was violated by considering “immigration consequences” in charging decisions and plea deals. This probe comes amid a concerning rise in violent crimes in Fairfax County, some of which involved undocumented immigrants.

The Victim Rights Reform Council had formally requested the DOJ to launch this investigation. The request was made on behalf of Cheryl Minter, whose daughter, Stephanie Minter, was tragically stabbed to death at a bus stop earlier this year. The alleged perpetrator is Abdul Jalloh, a 32-year-old undocumented immigrant from Sierra Leone.

In response to the DOJ’s investigation, Descano’s office issued a statement through spokeswoman Laura Birnbaum. Birnbaum asserted that the investigation was a continuation of the Trump administration’s “pattern or practice” of misusing the Justice Department for “partisan attacks.”

Birnbaum further claimed that the DOJ’s letter announcing the investigation misrepresented the office’s policy. She highlighted that this policy had been publicly in place for over five years and noted the timing of the investigation’s announcement, which coincided with Descano’s upcoming testimony before Congress.

Descano’s political ascent was significantly aided by a substantial donation of $627,653 from the Soros family’s Justice and Public Safety PAC. He is scheduled to testify before the House Judiciary Committee’s Subcommittee on Immigration Integrity, Security, and Enforcement on Thursday.

The hearing is specifically titled “Fairfax County, Virginia: The Dangerous Consequences of Sanctuary Policies.” Alongside Descano, other scheduled witnesses include County Sheriff Stacey Kincaid, Cheryl Minter, former Virginia Attorney General Jason Miyares (a Republican), and Sean Kennedy, President of Virginians for Safe Communities.

Birnbaum maintained that Descano’s office policies are “fair, legal, and reflect the values of Fairfax County.” She emphasized that the office would remain focused on its mission of ensuring community safety and holding criminals accountable.

Harrison, in her rebuttal, reiterated that the civil rights investigation was prompted by a complaint filed by a victim’s loved one. She explicitly stated that she filed the complaint on behalf of Cheryl Minter.

Harrison continued by acknowledging that Descano’s policies had been in effect for a considerable period. She implied that if these “deadly and disastrous policies” had not been in place, Stephanie Minter might still be alive, underscoring the reason for the complaint and the subsequent investigation.

In a separate post on X, Harrison praised Cheryl Minter as an “amazing, brave woman.” She expressed a desire to honor Stephanie’s memory by preventing similar tragedies from occurring.

Fox News Digital reached out to Descano’s office for a statement regarding these developments.

Following Stephanie Minter’s death, a press release from the Department of Homeland Security indicated that Descano’s office had been previously warned about Abdul Jalloh and the potential danger he posed to the public.

Last week, Assistant Attorney General Harmeet Dhillon stated that the investigation into Descano would concentrate on his practices concerning plea bargaining, charging decisions, and sentencing policies.

Dhillon articulated that under her leadership, the Civil Rights Division would not permit local prosecutors to arbitrarily favor individuals based on their immigration status. She added that the investigation would aim to determine if Descano’s actions placed the community at risk by offering lenient deals to undocumented immigrants facing serious criminal charges.
