SouthernWorldwide.com – The New York Giants have suffered a significant blow to their defensive line as key player Roy Robertson-Harris has reportedly torn his Achilles tendon during a recent OTA practice, sidelining him for the entire season.
The injury occurred on Thursday, marking a premature end to Robertson-Harris’ season. The 32-year-old defensive tackle was slated to play a crucial role in the Giants’ defensive scheme this upcoming season.
His importance was amplified following the offseason trade of star defensive tackle Dexter Lawrence to the Cincinnati Bengals. Robertson-Harris had been a consistent presence, starting all 17 games last year and participating in 56% of defensive snaps, second only to Lawrence among the team’s defensive tackles.

According to reports, Robertson-Harris sustained the injury while attempting to rush the passer during an 11-on-11 drill. Witnesses described him going down and immediately clutching his leg, indicating the severity of the injury.
The Giants had signed Robertson-Harris to a two-year contract worth $9 million prior to last season. In his 17 appearances last year, he recorded 35 tackles and three tackles for loss, demonstrating his effectiveness on the field.
The loss of Robertson-Harris further thins an already depleted defensive tackle group, especially after the departure of Dexter Lawrence. The team will now have to rely on a combination of veteran additions and emerging younger talent to fill the void.
In response to these personnel changes, the Giants brought in veteran defensive tackles DJ Reader and Shelby Harris during free agency. Reader, who started all 17 games for the Detroit Lions last season, is known for his strong run-stopping abilities, having recorded 28 tackles.
Shelby Harris also brings valuable experience, having played in 17 games, with five starts, for the Cleveland Browns last season. He contributed 32 tackles, seven tackles for loss, and one sack to their defense.
Additionally, the Giants are looking to Darius Alexander, their third-round pick from last season, to step up and help compensate for the absences of both Robertson-Harris and Lawrence. The 25-year-old played in 16 games in his rookie year, tallying 20 tackles, four tackles for loss, and 3.5 sacks.
The team also added depth to the defensive tackle position by drafting Bobby Jamison-Travis in the sixth round from Auburn in the most recent NFL Draft, signaling their intent to build for the future despite current challenges.
