SouthernWorldwide.com – Maine Republican state Sen. Trey Stewart has issued a stark warning to the Democratic Party, asserting that their endorsement of controversial Senate candidate Graham Platner represents a “selling their soul” and a move towards a “dangerous place” should Platner secure a Senate seat in November.
Stewart criticized Platner, describing him as a fleeting phenomenon among extreme liberal Democrats primarily focused on defeating Senator Susan Collins. He highlighted Platner’s alleged controversial past, including a tattoo affiliated with Nazis, disparaging remarks about combat-injured veterans, and statements that were racist, bigoted, and misogynistic. Stewart suggested that Platner embodies the very characteristics the left often criticizes in the right.

Stewart expressed confidence in Senator Collins’ re-election, emphasizing her significant influence in the U.S. Senate and her financial and otherwise impact on Maine. He believes Collins will be victorious because Maine is fundamentally a “middle-of-the-road state.”
This is not the first time Senator Collins has faced a progressive challenger gaining traction. In 2020, she overcame a significant deficit in polls against former Maine House Speaker Sara Gideon, ultimately winning a closely contested and historically expensive race.
Stewart contends that Maine voters generally reject candidates from the far-right and far-left. He stated that Platner’s “extreme position is not going to be something that voters reward here in November.”
He further commented that the Democratic Party’s “embarrassing” decision to support Platner reflects the party’s current standing and reveals a need for “soul-searching.”

Stewart found it “highly embarrassing” that this is the direction the Democratic Party, both in Maine and nationally, is heading, describing it as an extreme “tail-wagging-the-dog effect.” He warned that if this is indeed the party’s trajectory, it would lead to a “very dangerous place” for both the Democrats and the country.
Platner, a U.S. Marine Corps veteran with four combat tours in Iraq and Afghanistan, has faced intense scrutiny over deleted Reddit posts. Republicans have criticized him for not adequately addressing or apologizing for these remarks.

In a June 2019 post, Platner reportedly mocked a video of Purple Heart recipient Teddy Daniels, who was shot multiple times in Afghanistan. Platner allegedly wrote that Daniels “didn’t deserve to live.”
Stewart believes this is not the appropriate course of action for Platner. He stated that Platner owes apologies to those he has offended and that a seat in the United States Senate is “completely out of grasp” for someone with his record.
Stewart concluded by suggesting that Platner “really just needs help” and does not need to be in the U.S. Senate.
Following Democratic Governor Janet Mills’ decision to withdraw from the Senate race last month, Platner emerged as the presumptive Democratic nominee for the June 9 primary. The winner of this primary will go on to challenge Senator Collins in November.
