GOP Worried Trump’s Texas Endorsement Could Aid Democrats

SouthernWorldwide.com – The Republican Party is reportedly concerned that former President Donald Trump’s late endorsement in the Texas Senate race might inadvertently benefit the Democratic Party.

This concern emerged shortly after President Donald Trump announced his preferred candidate in the Texas Senate race, causing an immediate shift in the atmosphere among Senate Republicans.

Many lawmakers were on their way to a private weekly lunch to discuss the stalled immigration funding package and outline the strategy for a potentially contentious week in the Senate.

However, Trump’s decision to endorse Texas Attorney General Ken Paxton over the long-serving incumbent Senator John Cornyn, R-Texas, left even the most talkative politicians looking somber.

Some are now worried that this endorsement could put a Senate seat, which has been reliably Republican for decades, at risk.

Senator Lisa Murkowski, R-Alaska, expressed her profound disappointment with the decision.

“I believe this puts that seat in jeopardy,” Murkowski stated.

“Based on the numbers I’ve seen, yes,” she added. “How does this strengthen the president’s position if we lose a state like Texas?”

The winner of the runoff election will face the rising star of the Democratic Party, Texas state Representative James Talarico.

Talarico had a significant victory earlier this year, unseating Representative Jasmine Crockett, D-Texas, and has since garnered endorsements from prominent Democrats, including former President Barack Obama.

“I do believe we are going to win Texas, but I think John Cornyn was the safest bet,” stated Senator Steve Daines, R-Montana.

Cornyn has consistently criticized Paxton over scandals that have plagued his campaign, such as his impeachment and allegations of an affair.

Cornyn had warned that if Paxton were to win, he would become a significant liability for the Republican Party heading into the November elections.

“It is now time for Texas Republican voters to decide if they want a strong nominee to help our GOP candidates down-ballot and defeat Talarico in November, or a weak nominee who jeopardizes everything we care about. I trust the Republican voters of Texas,” Cornyn remarked.

A spokesperson for Paxton, Maddux, countered these concerns, stating, “This is the only talking point the Cornyn campaign has because, after 42 years of accomplishing nothing, Cornyn has no record to run on.”

“The bottom line is that Ken Paxton will be the Republican nominee for this fall, and we are ready to unite the party,” Maddux added.

He further emphasized, “The GOP is up against the most radical Democrat who’s ever run statewide in Texas, and Republicans need to come together to save our state from his extremist views.”

Despite these internal party dynamics, Trump’s endorsement of Paxton just a week before the primary runoff against Cornyn sent shockwaves through the Senate Republican conference.

This was particularly impactful as they were still recovering from the primary loss of Senator Bill Cassidy, R-Louisiana, to Trump-backed Representative Julia Letlow, R-Louisiana.

With Election Day now here, Cornyn and Paxton are set for their final showdown of this election cycle.

Many of Cornyn’s colleagues have indicated they will not switch their support to Paxton.

Several have voiced concerns that Paxton carries significant baggage that could endanger the Republican hold on the Senate seat.

“I thought Ken Paxton was a felon,” Senator Cassidy told reporters.

Senate Majority Leader John Thune, R-South Dakota, who had actively lobbied Trump to support Cornyn, acknowledged that the decision ultimately rested with the former president.

“Senator Cornyn is a principled conservative,” Thune said. “He is a very effective senator for the state of Texas.”

“None of us control what the president does. He made his decision about that. That doesn’t change the way I feel, and I am certainly supportive of and will continue to be supportive of Senator Cornyn in his re-election,” Thune concluded.
