House Democrats Fail to Break GOP Support for Trump’s Iran Strategy

SouthernWorldwide.com – House Democrats once again failed on Thursday to break Republican support for President Donald Trump’s strategy concerning Iran, as Republican lawmakers overwhelmingly rejected an attempt to limit his war powers.

The House of Representatives ended in a 212-212 tie, blocking a resolution proposed by Representative Josh Gottheimer, D-N.J. This resolution would have required Trump to cease hostilities against Iran unless Congress provided authorization.

Nearly all Democratic lawmakers voted in favor of the measure, with the exception of Representative Jared Golden, D-Maine. Among Republicans, Representatives Thomas Massie, R-Ky., a prominent critic of Trump, along with Representatives Brian Fitzpatrick, R-Pa., and Tom Barrett, R-Mich., were the only ones to vote against their party lines in support of the resolution.

Several members from both parties did not cast a vote.

This failed vote comes at a time when peace negotiations between Washington and Tehran have stalled in recent weeks. However, the ceasefire has largely held despite occasional clashes.

President Trump stated on Monday that the ceasefire was “on life support” and reiterated his demand for Iran to abandon its nuclear program.

Amid this deadlock, congressional Democrats have attempted to connect the conflict to voters’ concerns about the cost of living, aiming to pressure Republican lawmakers into opposing the president.

“The quickest way to reduce expenses is to end this war,” stated House Democratic Whip Katherine Clark, D-Mass., on the House floor on Wednesday. “And once again, Republicans will have the chance to do just that. Once again, they have an opportunity to bring our service members home and put an end to this chaos.”

Conversely, Republicans have argued that restricting Trump’s war powers could hinder his ability to conclude the conflict.

“What I have observed from the president is a clear intention to prevent Iran from acquiring nuclear weapons and from being the foremost state sponsor of terrorism,” he added.

The overwhelming majority of Republicans have continued to back Trump’s Iran strategy, even as the administration bypassed a 60-day deadline to seek congressional approval for the conflict.

The president has maintained that the indefinite ceasefire, which began on April 7, effectively paused the clock. Secretary of State Marco Rubio has also argued that the 1973 War Powers Resolution, which grants Congress a voice in the use of military force, is unconstitutional.

On the other side of the Capitol, Republican support for the war in Iran appears to be less firm.

The Senate narrowly defeated a war powers resolution on Wednesday, marking the seventh attempt by Democrats since Operation Epic Fury commenced on February 28. This resolution aimed to end hostilities with Iran.

Senators Rand Paul, R-Ky., Susan Collins, R-Maine, and Lisa Murkowski, R-Alaska, crossed party lines to support the measure that would have curbed Trump’s war powers. Senator John Fetterman, D-Pa., joined Republicans in opposing it. Just one additional Republican vote in favor would have allowed the resolution to pass the chamber.

Senator Murkowski, who changed her vote to support the war powers resolution, stated on Wednesday that the administration’s timeline in Iran “has taken us beyond the 60 days” deadline for Congress to authorize or halt the conflict.

She had hoped for more clarity from the administration, but when that information was not provided, it prompted her to join Democrats in limiting Trump’s war powers.

“We are in a different situation than we were the last time we voted on this,” Murkowski commented.
