House Republican Absent Again, Affecting Thin Majority’s Votes

SouthernWorldwide.com – Congressman Kean, a Republican representing New Jersey, has missed another week of votes in the House of Representatives due to a personal health matter, further straining the already thin Republican majority.

His chief of staff, Dan Scharfenberger, stated on Monday that Congressman Kean is attending to a personal health matter and expressed appreciation for the public’s support. He added that the Congressman is expected to return to his full schedule soon.

The 57-year-old Congressman has not disclosed the nature of his health issue or a specific return date. His office has consistently indicated for several weeks that he would resume his congressional duties “soon.”

According to GovTrack, a website that tracks congressional activities, Kean has not cast a vote since March 5. During this period, he missed all 70 roll-call votes in the House. These missed votes included crucial legislation aimed at ending a government shutdown and extending a vital warrantless surveillance tool.

The absence of Congressman Kean has a disproportionate impact on the House Republicans’ narrow majority. This situation means that House Speaker Mike Johnson can only afford to lose a very limited number of votes on bills that party lines typically divide. It is also worth noting that Democrats have faced challenges in maintaining full attendance in recent weeks.

In April, Speaker Johnson mentioned that he had spoken with Congressman Kean by phone and expressed his expectation of a full recovery for the Congressman.

The extended absence of Congressman Kean from Washington D.C. occurs as he faces a potentially challenging re-election campaign in a district considered one of the most competitive in the nation. The Democratic Congressional Campaign Committee is anticipated to aggressively target this swing seat, and four Democratic candidates are currently vying to challenge him in a crowded June primary election.

The New Jersey Republican currently has no challengers from within his own party and is seeking a third term in the House with the endorsement of President Donald Trump.

The nonpartisan Cook Political Report classifies this contest as a “toss-up.” This classification follows a downgrade in favor of Democrats that occurred last year.

Despite his absence, Congressman Kean’s office has continued to be active on social media while he recovers from his undisclosed medical issue.

“The Congressman’s team continues to serve the people of New Jersey uninterrupted,” Scharfenberger stated.
