Addressing members of the Somali community, Frey stated, “Through the most difficult of times and through Operation Metro surge, we all saw that they tried to come for some of us.” He continued, “And when that happens, we say that you’re coming for all of us.” This sentiment highlights a shared experience of facing adversity and the importance of collective support.
The Mayor further articulated his vision of unity within Minneapolis. “In Minneapolis, we loved our neighbors. In Minneapolis, we do not see you as immigrants. We see you as our family,” he declared. “You are our brothers. You’re our sisters. Frey’s reference to Operation Metro Surge likely alludes to a past immigration and public safety initiative led by the Trump administration in Minnesota. This operation, which concluded in February, was announced by border czar Tom Homan. Homan stated that it resulted in over 4,000 arrests in the Minneapolis-St. Paul area and was credited with reducing perceived public safety threats.

Earlier this month, a report from the Republican-led House Oversight Committee alleged that Governor Walz’s administration had failed to act on warnings regarding fraud in state social services programs. A prominent case mentioned is the “Feeding Our Future” scandal.
The committee’s report indicated that over 110 individuals have been charged in connection with various fraud schemes across Minnesota. A significant number of these defendants have been identified as members of Minnesota’s Somali immigrant community. Furthermore, the report raised concerns that potential claims of racial discrimination may have contributed to delays in addressing suspected fraud.
