Joe Mazzulla Named NBA Coach of the Year After Calling Award ‘Stupid

SouthernWorldwide.com – Boston Celtics head coach Joe Mazzulla, who previously dismissed the Coach of the Year award as “stupid,” has now been named the recipient of the prestigious honor.

Just months prior, Mazzulla had expressed his disdain for the award, stating, “I don’t need it. I think it’s a stupid award.” This sentiment came in March when he was asked about the possibility of winning it, given the Celtics’ strong regular-season performance despite the absence of key players like Jayson Tatum for significant portions of the year.

The announcement of the award’s winner was made on Tuesday night. Mazzulla guided the Celtics to the second seed in the Eastern Conference with an impressive 56-26 record, finishing four games behind the top-seeded Detroit Pistons.

Mazzulla’s critique of the award stemmed from his belief that it should recognize the entire coaching staff rather than a single individual. He felt that the collective effort behind a team’s success was often overlooked.

Speaking on Tuesday night, Mazzulla elaborated on his perspective to NBC. He highlighted the extensive work put in by everyone involved in a team’s preparation and success.

“The long nights, the trips, game plans, the video guys that are clipping up the film and coding it, the assistants who are putting in the game plan, I think there’s so much that goes into winning one game,” Mazzulla explained. “It starts with the players, but it goes to our staff. I feel bad that they’re not here — but forever indebted to the guys that we have that give up time with their families and their time to give us a chance to win every day.”

Mazzulla is now the fourth Celtics coach to receive this award, which is named in honor of the legendary Red Auerbach, a recipient himself in 1965. Other Celtics coaches who have earned the Red Auerbach Trophy include Tom Heinsohn in 1973 and Bill Fitch in 1980.

Red Auerbach’s illustrious career saw him lead the Celtics to nine NBA championships, including an astounding eight consecutive titles from 1959 to 1966. His contributions to the sport are legendary.

While Mazzulla’s coaching prowess was recognized with the Coach of the Year award, the Celtics’ playoff journey in 2024 did not culminate in the championship glory they sought. Despite their stars returning to health late in the season, the team was unexpectedly eliminated in the first round after a Game 7 loss to the Philadelphia 76ers.

At 37 years old, Mazzulla has become the youngest head coach to win the Coach of the Year award since the iconic Phil Jackson received it in 1975, according to NBA records.

Despite Mazzulla’s inclination to share the credit with his staff, Celtics president of basketball operations, Brad Stevens, offered high praise for his fourth-year head coach.

“This is well deserved recognition and a testament to both Joe and his staff,” Stevens commented. “With all of our unknowns entering the season, Joe did a fantastic job building and growing a team. He pours everything he has into competing at a high level, while helping players find the best versions of themselves within the framework of a team.”
