SouthernWorldwide.com – The unparalleled legacy of Joey Chestnut in competitive eating has been further cemented as he secured his 18th championship title at the renowned Nathan’s Hot Dog Eating Contest.
Chestnut once again dominated the field, consuming an astonishing 66 hot dogs and buns to claim victory at the iconic Coney Island event.
This marks his 10th consecutive win, a testament to his enduring prowess. It is important to note that Chestnut was unfortunately unable to participate in the 2024 event due to prior sponsorship commitments.
The early stages of the competition saw Chestnut in close contention with fellow competitors Patrick Bertoletti and James Webb. For the initial 90 seconds, the race was tight.
However, Chestnut soon began to establish his dominance. By the three-minute mark, he had already consumed 28 hot dogs, outpacing Webb (22) and Bertoletti (21). At the halfway point, Chestnut had reached an impressive 42 hot dogs, holding a significant 10-wiener lead.
Chestnut maintained a pace that suggested a potential record-breaking performance with four minutes remaining. Despite the challenges of fatigue, a full stomach, and the intense heat, he continued to push his limits.
With just 60 seconds left on the clock, Chestnut had reached the 60-hot dog mark, with officials later confirming his final tally of 66.
He later admitted that while he recognized early on that a new record was unlikely, his focus remained steadfast on securing the win.
Notably, Chestnut participated in the contest while fulfilling an 180-day probation sentence. This followed a guilty plea to a misdemeanor battery charge related to an incident at an Indiana bar earlier this year. He had received special permission to travel to New York for the event.
In the women’s division, Miki Sudo emerged victorious, triumphing with 39 hot dogs and buns. Sudo boasts an undefeated record in the 12 contests she has entered, with her first win dating back to 2014.
