SouthernWorldwide.com – WWE veteran John Cena has officially announced a new special event designed to highlight both established WWE superstars and the rising talents of NXT.

The announcement came shortly after Cena teased “history-making” news leading up to WWE Backlash on Saturday. He has now revealed the formation of the John Cena Classic.

This event is set to be a comprehensive showcase of professional wrestling talent from across the entire WWE roster. It will encompass talent from the main WWE brands as well as those developing in NXT.

Cena stated that the event will feature a champion who will be determined by fan vote. Notably, WWE wrestlers who do not win their individual matches within the event could still emerge as the overall victor.

“I am so honored tonight to announce to you the John Cena Classic,” Cena shared with the audience in Tampa, Florida. “An entire evening of the best of today competing with the best of tomorrow.”

“An entire event where WWE superstars and NXT superstars get an opportunity to give you all they have in hopes to be crowned a champion,” he continued.

Cena emphasized his personal commitment to the event. He will be personally lending his name to the championship, striving for a high level of excellence.

“… And not just any championship. This is an event and this is a championship I’m personally putting my name on,” Cena explained. “So, I’m going to strive for a certain level of excellence and I’m also going to do everything I can to make it special.”

He also reiterated his belief that the audience is the “biggest star” in WWE. Fans will have the power to “crown the champion of the John Cena Classic,” and every participant on the card will be eligible to win the championship.

The 17-time WWE champion reflected on his recent experience of featuring future WWE talent on the card before his final match. Although Cena lost his bout against Gunther, several emerging stars had the opportunity to gain significant exposure in front of a large crowd in Washington, D.C., in December.

That previous event featured notable matchups. Sol Ruca secured a victory over Bayley, Oba Femi competed against Cody Rhodes, and Je’Von Evans and Leon Slater teamed up against AJ Styles and Dragon Lee.

The impact of these appearances has been evident. Femi later challenged and defeated Brock Lesnar at WrestleMania 42, while Evans narrowly missed out on the Intercontinental Championship at the same event. Ruca has since been promoted to the Raw brand and is slated to challenge Becky Lynch for the Women’s Intercontinental Championship.

Meanwhile, Leon Slater is nearing a record-breaking reign as the X-Division Champion for Total Nonstop Action Wrestling (TNA). These developments underscore the potential for growth that such showcase events can provide.

The exact date for the John Cena Classic has not yet been revealed. However, its introduction will undoubtedly add further excitement to WWE’s already busy schedule heading into the summer months.
