The Knicks clinched the title by defeating the San Antonio Spurs 94-90 in Game 5 of the NBA Finals held on Saturday in Texas. This victory marked the franchise’s first championship since 1973, ending a 53-year drought and igniting scenes of jubilation throughout the city.
In the wake of this historic win, images and videos circulated on social media showing some individuals causing damage to property.
One video appeared to capture two individuals jumping onto the roof of an NYPD vehicle, subsequently smashing its windshield.
Another video seemed to depict people climbing on and entering school buses in the vicinity of Times Square.
Although the championship-deciding game took place thousands of miles away, law enforcement maintained a significant presence around Madison Square Garden, the Knicks’ home arena.
Prior to the game, New York City Mayor Zohran Mamdani had urged fans to celebrate responsibly should the Knicks secure the franchise’s first NBA title in over fifty years.
“As we celebrate, be responsible, look out for one another, stay safe, be smart, and make this a night that reflects the very best of our city,” Mamdani posted on social media. “Let’s go Knicks.”
Despite these calls for restraint, the celebrations turned disorderly for some after the final buzzer sounded.
Officers clad in riot gear, some on horseback, worked to manage the large crowds that flooded the streets following the victory.
Additional videos shared online appeared to show law enforcement making arrests amidst the celebratory atmosphere.
“We will advise total numbers later on in the day,” a spokesperson for the NYPD stated.
Emergency officials cautioned residents and visitors to anticipate road closures and traffic disruptions in the areas surrounding Madison Square Garden.
Authorities also implored all those celebrating to adhere to instructions provided by the NYPD.
