SouthernWorldwide.com – NBA legend Magic Johnson found himself under scrutiny after publicly endorsing Karen Bass for the position of Los Angeles mayor.
The endorsement was shared by Bass through a video on her social media platforms. Johnson cited his three-decade-long friendship with Bass and her demonstrated efforts in addressing homelessness and reducing homicide rates as key factors influencing his decision.
However, the former Los Angeles Lakers star faced criticism for his involvement in the mayoral race, particularly given that he resides in Beverly Hills. This city is not among the 114 neighborhoods eligible to participate in the Los Angeles mayoral elections.

“She’s doing a tremendous job. Mayor Bass has to have a second term, and I’m excited to say that,” Johnson stated in the video. He continued, “Listen, you took on a tough job here, and you’ve done a fabulous job, and all of us appreciate your effort and what you’re doing. We look forward to helping you continue your mission and the things you have in store – your vision for the city.”
Karen Bass expressed her gratitude for the endorsement.
“Magic Johnson has been my friend for over 30 years. His belief in how I’m changing Los Angeles means everything to me,” Bass wrote on the social media platform X. She added, “Magic has poured his heart into this city long before anyone asked him to — through investment, through community, through showing up. I am deeply honored to have his endorsement.”
Notably, Johnson did not address a critical issue that has contributed to challenger Spencer Pratt gaining traction in the race: Bass’s handling of the 2025 wildfires. These fires resulted in at least a dozen fatalities and caused billions of dollars in damages.
Spencer Pratt has continued to challenge Bass regarding her response to the wildfires.
Lakers owner Jeanie Buss seemingly showed support for Pratt last month by contributing $1,800 to his mayoral campaign, according to FOX 11 in Los Angeles. This amount represents the maximum donation permissible by law.
Pratt, a former reality television personality from “The Hills,” was also observed with Buss at a Lakers playoff game over the preceding weekend.
