SouthernWorldwide.com – Mayor of New York City, Zohran Mamdani, commenced June’s Pride Month by acknowledging on X that a single month is insufficient to fully honor the profound and lasting contributions of “queer and transgender” individuals to the city’s rich tapestry.

Mamdani articulated that the city’s history is deeply intertwined with the experiences and achievements of its queer and transgender residents. He highlighted significant milestones, from the establishment of the Cercle Hermaphroditos in 1895, recognized as the first trans advocacy group in the United States, to the vibrant drag balls of the Harlem Renaissance.

He further underscored pivotal moments such as the Stonewall uprising and the founding of the Lesbian Herstory Archives. Mamdani also referenced ACT UP!, established in 1987, a group formed by queer individuals fighting for their lives during a period when the Reagan administration was perceived as indifferent.

The mayor expressed a heartfelt wish for his queer and trans neighbors, stating they deserve a city where they can live with safety, openness, and joy. He concluded his message with a warm “Happy Pride, New York City.”

The Democratic National Committee also marked the beginning of Pride Month with a post on X, encouraging individuals to “Love openly. Live authentically. Happy Pride!”

Several prominent Democratic figures shared messages of support and solidarity for the LGBTQ+ community. Former House Speaker Rep. Nancy Pelosi, D-Calif., posted on X, emphasizing the celebration of love, freedom, and the courage to live authentically during #PrideMonth.

Pelosi recognized the trailblazers and activists who have advanced the cause of equality across the nation and pledged to continue their vital work. She extended a “Happy #Pride!” to all.
