SouthernWorldwide.com – New York City Mayor Zohran Mamdani has defended a controversial city map that highlights immigrant enclaves, stating it was not intended to be exhaustive and promising updates following criticism for omitting Little Italy, along with Jewish and Irish neighborhoods.

Mamdani explained that the map was originally created by the previous administration in 2023. His administration added a few more neighborhoods when they inherited it. He acknowledged that it is not a complete list of the over 200 ethnic communities in the city. He also stated that future changes will be made to reflect this, which will include Little Italy.

The “New York City Immigrant Enclaves” map gained traction on social media this week. Users pointed out the exclusion of Little Italy, as well as Jewish and Irish communities, despite the map featuring 30 immigrant communities across the five boroughs. This map is part of the city’s Neighborhood Passport campaign, which is linked to the 2026 FIFA World Cup.

The Italian American Civil Rights League (IACRL) criticized the omission, accusing the administration of erasing a community that played a significant role in building New York.

The IACRL expressed their strong disapproval on X, stating that Zohran Mamdani’s administration wants to erase Italian Americans. They referenced a denied permit for Unity Day 2026 and now the exclusion of Little Italy from the map.

IACRL President Mike Crispi commented that Mamdani’s City Hall can accommodate every fashionable progressive constituency but cannot find a place for Little Italy.

The controversy also elicited a response from Republican New York City Council Member Vickie Paladino. She humorously posted on X that she was renaming her northeast Queens district “Little America.”

Paladino added that her district welcomes refugees from other parts of the city seeking a culture reminiscent of the United States they once knew.
