SouthernWorldwide.com – Toronto Maple Leafs forward Max Domi’s NHL career is currently on hold following recent surgery.

The Maple Leafs organization announced on May 25th that Domi had undergone a procedure to address an issue he had been playing through during the 2025-26 season. The official statement from the team did not disclose the specific type of surgery the 31-year-old player had, but it did state that Domi would be sidelined indefinitely due to complications that arose from the operation.

The timing of the Maple Leafs’ announcement, placing Domi out indefinitely during the team’s offseason, was considered unusual, particularly given that Domi participated in 80 games for the Leafs in the preceding season.

While the Maple Leafs have maintained a tight lid on the details surrounding Domi’s surgery and the subsequent complications, a recent report has shed light on the serious nature of his recovery process.

According to a report by the Toronto Sun on Sunday, Domi underwent a surgical procedure on his back. The report further indicated that in the days immediately following the surgery, Domi experienced significant mobility issues and was unable to walk.

The report also mentioned that Domi personally selected his surgeon for the operation, rather than opting for the surgeon recommended by the Leafs. However, it was noted that this choice is not uncommon in the professional sports landscape today.

“Whatever transpired here was not deemed successful. Apparently, Domi was unable to walk in the days after his surgery, which caused considerable concern,” wrote Steve Simmons. “His availability for the upcoming season remains uncertain.”

Domi has been a consistent presence in the Toronto lineup since he joined the team as a free agent prior to the 2023 season. He initially signed a one-year contract before securing a new multi-year deal. In each of his three seasons with the Maple Leafs, he has played at least 74 games.

Originally a first-round pick by the Arizona Coyotes in the 2013 NHL Draft, Domi recorded 12 goals and accumulated 36 points over his 80 appearances this past season.

Domi, who hails from Winnipeg, Manitoba, achieved a career-high of 72 points during the 2018-19 NHL season while playing for the Montreal Canadiens.
